Irene Martin, 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019 in Union County Nursing Home.

Faye Smith Watkins passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Born Lucy Faye Martin on November 21, 1925 in Andrews, North Carolina to Dink Cruise Martin and Weldon Martin.  She was raised in Andrews and graduated from Andrews High School in April of 1942.

Faye provided service during WWII as a Radio Mechanic Signal Section starting in September 1943.

Faye married Ivan Edward Smith on January 22, 1947 and had three children, Ronald Edward born November 27, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, Barbara Joyce (Bell) born August 19, 1950 in Andrews, North Carolina and Beverely Jane (Hector Cardenas) born December 27, 1951 in Andrews, North Carolina. Faye lived in many places including Baltimore, Maryland, Marietta and Kennesaw Georgia, and Phoenix, Arizona.  She was divorced from Ivan in 1974.  Faye worked as the Personnel Manager from November 1971 to August 1987 at Goldwaters in Phoenix, a Division of Associated Dry Goods Corporation later acquired by May Company. She was married to Samuel Harvey Watkins on May 16, 1987.  Faye lived in Overgaard, Arizona until February 1995, then relocated to Phoenix.

Faye is survived by her sister, Leola Martin Jordan, her three children and her four loving grandchildren, Rhonda McMahan (Jeffrey) Skallan, Shannon Bell, Michael Cardenas, and Christopher Cardenas.

Members of immediate family received family and friends beginning at noon on Monday, January 14, 2019 followed by a chapel service at 1:00 PM at Ivie Funeral Home in Andrews, North Carolina. A graveside service followed at Valleytown Cemetery, Andrews.

Tabitha Rae Coffey, age 39, of Marble, passed away Friday, January 4, 2019.

Elveta Stamey, 96, of Hayesville passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2018 in a Towns County, Georgia care facility. She was a native of Clay County, where she had lived most of her life. Elveta worked at Carolina Dress and Peachtree Products for several years. She was a member of the Tusquittee Church of God.

She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Zada Reynolds Rowland. She was also preceded in death by a son, Sammy Stamey; four sisters; a brother; and three step-sisters.

Surviving are three daughters, Carole Scroggs of Jonesboro, Tennessee, Dolores Law of Nashville, Tennessee, and Lynn Padgett of Hayesville; two sons, Clarence Stamey of Castle Rock, Washington and Edward Stamey of Suches, Georgia; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2018 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Gary Ashe and Bishop Rayburne Wilson officiating. The interment was in Union Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Marty Scroggs, Sammy Lee Stamey, Richie Parker, Jeff Padgett, Zach Cook, and Brent Scroggs. Honorary pallbearers were Dalton Padgett, Liam Parker, and Drew Cook.

Donald Kelly, 87, of Hayesville passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at his residence. He was a native of Natick, Massachusetts. Donald lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania most of his adult life. He also lived in Bonita Springs, Florida before moving to Hiawassee, Georgia in 2009. Donald served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was very active with the VFW Post 7807 in Hiawassee, where he was a lifetime member. He was also a member of the American Legion and supported the local Warrior Clan. Donald was a member of the Hayesville First United Methodist Church.

He was the son of the late William Thomas and Margaret McGlone Kelly. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John V. Kelly and William Thomas Kelly.

Surviving are two sons, Donald Scott Kelly and wife, Gina of Bristol, Pennsylvania, and Craig Kelly of Langhorne, Pennsylvania; his life partner, Billie Shelburn of Hayesville; and four grandchildren, Christine, Bryant, Taylor, and Shawn.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the VFW Post 7807, 1329 Sunnyside Road, Hiawassee, Georgia.

Dr. Walter Bryant Graham

Dr. Walter Bryant Graham, age 82, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019 in a Murphy care facility. He was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan and had joined the United States Air Force after graduating high school. Walter was a Korean War Era veteran who served as a pharmacy tech. He later completed his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University and received his Doctorate at the University of Florida. Walter completed his residency at Baylor University before returning to the University of Florida where he received his Neurology doctorate. He began work in Bradenton, Florida in 1970 where he had worked as a Doctor of Neurology until his retirement in 1999. Following retirement, he moved to Murphy in 2000. Walter had enjoyed fishing in his younger years, gardening, and was a wonderful chef.

He was the son of the late Wilfred and Elizabeth Bryant Graham. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ann.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Ann Nixon Graham; two daughters, Norma Banes and husband, David of Gainesville, Florida and Kendra Dibble and husband, Lucius of Shelbourn, Vermont; two sons, Al Graham and wife, Yvonne of Bradenton, Florida and Andrew Graham and wife, Jessica of McKinney, Texas; a sister, Marcia West and husband, Monty of Michigan; eight grandchildren, Kevin Banes, Heather Sullivan, Aaron and Nick Graham, Ava and Audrey Graham, Graham and Anna Dibble; and a great granddaughter, Riley Sullivan.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Stella Mease Cloer, 90, of Asheville, formerly of Hayesville, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019 in a Canton, North Carolina care facility. She was a native of Clay County and lived in Haywood County for 38 years before moving to Buncombe County four years ago. She was a homemaker and also worked as a seamstress. Stella was of the Baptist faith.

She was the daughter of the late Tom and Anna Watson Mease and the wife of the late Andrew “Andy” Jacob Cloer, who died June 6, 2009. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas William Cloer; and a sister, Windle Mease.

Surviving are a son, Randy Cloer of Sylva; a brother, Dennis Mease of Hayesville; and a granddaughter and caregivers, Bethany Starling and husband, John of Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 7, 2019 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Dwight Moss officiating. The interment was in the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were David McClure, John Starling, Jack Sales, Floyd Phillips, Danny Jones, and Joe Buckner.

Jerome F. “Jerry” Chaplo

Jerome F. “Jerry” Chaplo, 82, of Andrews died Sunday, March 10, 2019 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a native of Peekskill, New York, but lived most of his life in Casselberry, Florida before retiring to Andrews, North Carolina in 2003. Jerry was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired as a mechanic’s helper for the City of Casselberry. Jerry attended the Saint William Catholic Church.

He was the son of the late Bernard Joseph and Helen Anna Trochan Chaplo. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Bernard Chaplo.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Carole Miller Chaplo; two sons, Stephen J. Chaplo and fiancé, Deneen M. Olivieri of Casselberry, Florida and Eugene K. Chaplo and wife, Karin of DeBary, Florida; and a granddaughter, Janyce E. Chaplo.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with Father George Byers officiating.

Madge Kitchens Moss

Madge Kitchens Moss, 94, of Hayesville went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at her residence. She was a member of Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church. Madge enjoyed gardening and canning. She loved cooking for everybody and treating them with her fried apple pies.

She was the daughter of the late Wiley and Lena Ashe Kitchens and wife of the late Ledger Z. Moss, who died February 8, 1995. She was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Kitchens.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Patterson of Hayesville; two sons, Gene Moss and wife, Carolyn Eller of Young Harris, Georgia, and Clark Moss and wife, Beth of Hayesville; and five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2019 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Revs. Kyle Cody and Israel Rogers officiating. The interment will be in Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ketron Moss officiating. Pallbearers will be Kevin Moss, Rodney and Greg Penland, Gene Youngblood, Josh Woodard, and David Moses. William G. Sabine, 73, of Murphy passed away Monday, January 14, 2019 at his residence.

Betty Decker Miller Taylor, 94, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Murphy, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2018 in a Charlotte care facility. She was a native of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and grew up in Washington, DC. After working for American Airlines in Washington, she moved to Florida where Betty met and married Joe Miller. She had worked as a loan officer in both Commercial Bank of Hollywood, Florida and First Union Bank for nearly 20 years. Betty had lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before retiring to Murphy in 1994. Betty was a devoted mother and devout Christian.

She was the daughter of the late Oller Donald and Elizabeth Ellen Hudson Decker and the wife of the late Joe Miller, who passed March 17, 1978 and the late Charles E. Taylor, who passed December 8, 1999. Betty was also preceded in death by a son, Shane E. Miller; and a daughter, Kristal L. Miller.

Surviving are a daughter, Kelly Hansen and husband, Kris of Charlotte, North Carolina; two sisters, Sally Ann Birge and Helen Jean Allingham, both of Fairfax, Virginia; two grandchildren, Kacie Hansen of Riverview, Florida and Kyle Hansen and wife, Theresa of Panama City, Florida; and two nephews, Kyle and Dwayne Holt.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah with Rev. Dr. Maggie Rourk officiating. Inurnment will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018 in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Floyd “Chub” Brooks, 88, of Andrews passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018 in a Murphy care facility. He was born in Clay County, but was a lifetime resident of Andrews. Chub worked with his family at Reece Motor Company as parts manager. He also worked as a parts manager for several other businesses. Chub volunteered with the Andrews Fire Department and retired as fire chief. He was a member of Andrews First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, and superintendent.

He was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson “Jeff” and Cordie Elizabeth Ledford Brooks. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Frances West and Divola Frye; and two brothers, Thomas Frank Brooks and J.V. Brooks.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, June Lunsford Brooks; a daughter, Nancy Brooks Bradshaw and husband, Wilfred of Andrews; two sons, David Brooks and wife, Ann of Andrews, and Steven Brooks and wife, Patricia of Clarkesville, Georgia; a sister, Alma “Cricket” Gray of Andrews; a brother, Wade Brooks and wife, Judy of Andrews; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018 in the Andrews First Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Bobo officiating. The inurnment will be in Valleytown Cemetery at a later date.

Della Mae Sherrill

Della Mae Sherrill, 79, of Andrews went home to be with the Lord after a lengthy illness on Sunday, March 10, 2019. She was a native of Bryson City, but moved to Andrews as a child, where she lived throughout her life. She was married on June 24, 1960 at Valleytown Baptist Church to her loving husband, Maurice Sherrill. She worked throughout her life alongside her husband in the family business. Della was an active member of the Andrews First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served on various committees. Della loved watching her nieces and nephews play sports and enjoyed cooking for her church family and many others. Della also enjoyed travelling with her husband and friends.

She was the daughter of the late Lee and Ruby Bailey.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Maurice Sherrill; a sister, Doris Anderson of Murphy; a brother, Wayne Bailey and wife, Sally of Andrews; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2019 in the Andrews First Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Bobo officiating. The interment was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mitch Waldroup, Bobby Grindstaff, Troy Crisp, Phillip Hodge, Danny Barton, and Tim West. Honorary pallbearers were Michael McQuade, Ian McQuade, Terry Sherrill, Gary Stroud, Trevor Waldroup, Brett Gibson, Frank Wilson, Gary Kauffman, Donald Hogan, Wade Brooks, John Goins, and Olen Clark.
