Jake Mctaggart to Return to Hayesville

Hayesville

Breaking news Yellow Jacket fan base, Hayesville’s own Jake Mctaggart has officially re-enrolled at Hayesville high school as of today. Mctaggart transferred to Towns County last fall after North Carolina postponed all sports seasons including football and basketball. Hayesville lost many good athletes more so than any other school in the area to surrounding Georgia schools after the NCHSAA’s decision to postpone all sports seasons. It is great to now be able to get at least one of those athletes back.

Mctaggart had garnered several big-time awards during his time as a basketball player at Hayesville. For one he was the SMC conference basketball player of the year his sophomore season. During his sophomore season for Hayesville, he averaged 19 points per game as well as becoming a fan favorite for his many highlight-reel dunks. His junior basketball season at Towns County was one for the history books. He led Towns to their first-ever basketball state championship. He averaged a double-double of 16 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. Even more impressive during the playoffs he averaged 22 points per game and 12 rebounds per game. For anyone that watched the Towns County playoff run it was evident that not only did he raise his level of play but he was Towns County’s go-to guy during the championship run. This was a big reason he was named the FYN Sports Georgia player of the year. Now He comes back to a Hayesville basketball squad that brings back Kolbe Ashe who led the Yellow Jackets to an undefeated season. As well Ashe was named the FYN Sports North Carolina player of the year. With Mctaggart back Hayesville was already the favorite to win the conference in basketball next year now may be the favorite to win state with a duo like Ashe and Mctaggart.

Hayesville

Head basketball coach Michael Cottrell had this to say about Mctaggart’s return.

“I am excited about athletics getting back on track as normal seasons approach in august. Student-athletes are going to have a great experience the rest of this year and getting the sports seasons starting again this summer It’s good to see our student-athletes heading back home after this strange COVID time. I know all of our students are ready to get things back to somewhat normal again.”

In Football Mctaggart has limitless potential but an injury his sophomore year kept him from playing. We know that a full season could be something special from Mctaggart especially when you think that his freshman season at Hayesville on a 1-9 football team he had some solid stats. 32 carries for 172 yards, 5.4 yards per carry, 20 catches for 237 yards 2 TDs, he even threw for 3 TDs. Then because of Covid situations he only played in five football games at Towns County this past year. In only five games though he had 13 catches for 245 yards.

Head football coach Chad McClure had this to say about Mctaggart’s return.

Jake is a talented athlete. Every player who enters our program can help us continue to build a team that can compete for an SMC championship. As a staff, we will see where he can most effectively help us. We have some great players returning as well, so we are excited about our Fall 2021 team.”

Interview with Jake Mctaggart:

Q: What drove your decision to come back to Hayesville?

A: Hayesville is home and there’s no place like home. That was the deciding factor in my decision. I want to spend my last year with the kids I have grown up with and this community. Hayesville is a very special place to me and I’m excited to be back with my friends and teammates, excited for a big year.

Q: What are your goals in football and basketball for your senior year?

A: Enjoy my senior year and cherish this time with my teammates are my main goals for next year. I’m super excited to be back. I know the sky is the limit for both our football and basketball teams. Just have to work hard and see where this season goes.

Yellow Jackets Dominate Swain in Season Finale

Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets traveled to Swain on Friday night to take on the Maroon Devils. It had been 18 years since the last time Hayesville had beaten Swain. The Yellow Jackets looking to end the season on a winning streak did just that. With some big offensive performances and multiple interceptions on defense, Hayesville won 41-26.

1st Quarter:

Hayesville started the game on defense, while not giving up any big plays Hayesville did allow a first-drive touchdown to the Maroon Devils. After getting the ball for the first time on offense the Yellow Jacket offense did not disappoint. Blake McClure got Hayesville right back in it with about a 35-yard touchdown run. Cable Krieger made a huge third-down pass break-up on the next Swain offensive drive. That helped Hayesville get the ball back with the game tied up 7-7 and that’s how the quarter ended.

2nd Quarter:

The Maroon Devils would get the first score of the quarter on a fullback dive taking a 14-7 lead. After a 3 and out Swain got the ball back and responded with a bomb touchdown pass. They did miss the extra point and it brought the score to 20-7 Swain leading. Hayesville responded as best as they could though and started to play some of their best football all season. Hayesville scored two straight touchdowns to tie it up going into halftime 20-20. The first touchdown was a 33-yard touchdown run by Taylor McClure. Followed up by a fumble recovery by Cable Krieger which led to a Kyle Lunsford touchdown reception.

3rd Quarter:

The second half was all Yellow Jackets, as Hayesville played some dominating football. After trading the ball back and forth on the first four drives of the second half Hayesville got a score to take their first lead of the game. Kyle Lunsford with his trademarked tough running punched one in for the Yellow Jackets. A great defensive third quarter that saw only one score by either team, ended with Hayesville Leading 27-20.

4th Quarter:

Swain had the ball to start the fourth quarter but not for long as Taylor McClure intercepted a deep pass. He ran it all way down to the 10 for about a 70 yard return, but some of it was negated by a block in the back. Hayesville just about got stopped having to go for it on fourth down from the Swain 30 yard line. Logan Caldwell threw a great pass to Tyler Anderson who made a great full layout over-the-shoulder catch for the touchdown. This gave Hayesville a two-score lead. On the next Swain drive, it ended once again with a huge Taylor McClure interception giving Hayesville the ball back and all but icing the game. Hayesville cruised to victory at this point winning 41-26.

Postgame Interview with Head Coach Chad McClure:

Q: Coming off a win at Rosman what was your mentality going into this game knowing that playoffs were out of reach but you had one last game this season?

A: Just to finish strong, finish the right way, play for these seniors who its there last game. Finish on a winning streak and beat Swain who we have not beaten in over a decade. We just challenged them to do something a Hayesville team has not done in a long time and they responded.

Q: After rough start to the year what does this momentum of ending on a two-game win streak do going into the offseason?
A: This season we had a lot of young kids get valuable experience, finishing on a win streak is big. I think its going to drive these kids to work hard, to have more moments like tonight in the locker room enjoying wins as a team and being excited having fun.

Q: Especially tonight, whats it mean to you not just as a head coach which I know can be hard to separate but also as a dad who has two sons on the team. A senior Blake McClure who led the way on offense tonight leading the team in rushing, but also Taylor McClure a freshman who led the team on defense tonight with two interceptions?

A: I am just blessed to be a part of it, a lot happened this past year because of Covid, but we were able to have this season and seeing them celebrate together, you know I am super proud. Proud of all my guys but when your a dad your proud too and they both played their best game of the season tonight. I mean what more could you ask for.

Hayesville’s Notable Offensive Stats:
Blake McClure 22 rushes for 161 yards 1 TD

Taylor McClure 6 Rushes for 49 yards 1 TD

Kyle Lunsford 1 rushing TD and 1 Receiving TD

Logan Caldwell 6/9 passing with 2 TDS

Hayesville’s season will end here but FYN Sports looks forward to getting into baseball season this spring and being back for football next fall.

Yellow Jackets Fall on the Road to the Braves

Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets traveled Cherokee Friday night to take on the Braves looking to pick up their first win of the season. Yet some special team miscues and mistakes gave Cherokee a big advantage on the night. Hayesville’s defense was on their heels as well most of the night with Cherokee having a big night passing. Ultimately the Braves won the game 42-17.

1st Quarter:

Cherokee received the opening kickoff and picked up a first down on the opening drive. Their drive ended though on third and long with a sack by Blake McClure. On Hayesville’s opening drive they picked big 3rd and 4th down pass completions to keep the drive going. Logan Caldwell came out playing much better than he did last week. Hayesville could not pick a second 4th down completion turning the ball over on downs. Cherokee took over on their own 35-yard line. Cherokee’s 2nd drive of the game was a good one, partly due to a Hayesville personal foul. The first quarter ended 0-0, with Cherokee inside the red zone.

2nd Quarter:

The Braves got to the 2-yard line on their first play of the quarter on an outside run. Yet with two tackles for loss in a row followed by a sack all by Blake McClure, it made it 4th and long. Cherokees QB though made a spectacular 4th down throw for a touchdown to put Cherokee up 7-0. Hayesville got a huge third-down completion on third and long from Logan Caldwell to Kyle Lunsford. Followed up two plays later by a 46 yard Blake McClure run to tie the game up at 7-7.

On the very first play of the next Cherokee drive, Hayesville forced and recovered a fumble to get the ball back. After Hayesville’s drive stalled inside the 10-yard line we saw the Yellow Jackets hit a field goal to take a 10-7 lead. On Cherokee’s next drive they got a couple of big runs by their QB before hitting a deep ball to take the lead back 14-10. Cherokee surprised Hayesville with an onside kick and got the ball back. They got a big pass on first down to take it down to Hayesville’s 12-yard line, followed up two plays later with a pass to the 1-yard line. They punched it in on the next play but the extra point was blocked to make the score 20-10 taking it into halftime.

3rd Quarter:

Hayesville’s opening drive ended quickly with an interception taken all the way down to Hayesvilles 5-yard line. With the great starting field position Cherokee punched it in quickly and got a 2 point conversion to make the score 28-10. Hayesville went 3 and out on the next drive giving it back to Cherokee. The Yellow Jackets got an important turnover though on Cherokee’s first offensive play getting the ball back. Hayesville could not get much going though giving the ball back to Cherokee after a turnover on downs. Hayesville did finish the quarter off though by getting another score to make it 28-17.

4th Quarter:

Cherokee opened the quarter by scoring a touchdown to take the score to 35-17. Hayesville’s time was running out in the game were need some big plays quickly. Yet a 3 and out was the result of their drive and Cherokee got the ball back. Hayesville did force Cherokee to punt but the punt hit a Hayesville player in the back and Cherokee recovered it to get the ball back. There was not much time left in the game at this point as Cherokee was able to bleed out most of the clock. They got one last score with 50 seconds left in the game making the final score 42-17.

Game Notes:

  • Blake McClure was having a big game both offensively and defensively for Hayesville but a third-quarter injury knocked him out of the game. It definitely hurt Hayesville as their top playmaker was unavailable.
  • The Yellow Jackets forced multiple turnovers but could turn them into points on offense.
  • The Yellow Jackets secondary played better than it appeared. Once McClure went out with injury, Hayesville couldn’t get any pressure on the QB. Cherokee had all day to throw and wide receivers eventually got open.

Notable Hayesville Offensive Stats:

Blake McClure: 7 rushes for 63 yards and 1 TD, 2 receptions for 23 yards

Logan Caldwell: 133 passing yards, 1 TD

Tyler Anderson: 3 receptions for 58 yards

Hayesville Falls to Rival Bulldogs

Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets hosted the Murphy Bulldogs in a rivalry matchup Friday night. The Bulldogs benefited from a few crucial referee decisions in the first half that led to a blowout game. If the decisions had gone in Hayesville’s favor the game probably would not have been a 54-21 blowout but rather a 10ish point game. Ultimately though the Bulldogs were simply the better team and proved as much throughout four quarters.

1st Quarter:

Hayesville on their first drive got a couple of big plays early but ended up punting away to Murphy. After getting the ball Murphy quickly marched down the field, scoring taking an early 7-0 lead. Hayesville once again found some success picking up a few first downs on their second drive. Yet once again they stalled shortly after getting into Murphy territory and on a bad shotgun snap turned the ball over to Murphy. Murphy capitalized on the turnover with a 45-yard scoring drive, closing the first quarter with a 14-0 lead.

2nd Quarter:

Hayesville started the second quarter on offense yet with some strange penalties by both teams Hayesville went three and out. Murphy like they did in the first quarter, had their offense humming and had another scoring drive to take a 21-0 lead. Hayesville was finally able to finally finish off an offensive drive. Freshman Taylor McClure scored a tough 12-yard run but Hayesvilles extra point was blocked making the score 21-6.

The next series was the one that really hurt Hayesville, with a crucial referee decision changing the game. Murphy quarterback was pushing forward when Hayesville forced a fumble taking it back for a touchdown. Yet after the referees talked it over they ruled the play dead, and Murphy ended up scoring on the drive. So if the correct call had been made it would have gone into half 21-14 instead we went into half Murphy leading 28-6.

3rd quarter:

The Bulldogs received the second-half kick and had a great return giving them good starting field position. A few plays into their drive Hayesville senior William Wimpey forced a huge turnover. Giving Hayesville the break they needed stopping Murphy’s offense for the first time all night. Hayesville could not capitalize though going three and out having to punt. a long touchdown run from Murphy on the ensuing drive increased the score to 34-6. On the first play of the drive, Hayesvilles Blake McClure ripped off a 60-yard run all the way down to Murphy’s 5-yard line.

McClure finished off the drive a few plays later and Hayesville converted a 2-point conversion to make the score 34-14.  Murphy’s offense once again scored making the score 42-14 late in the third quarter. The last play of the quarter saw Hayesville throw an interception with Murphy returning it all the way to the 1-yard line.

4th Quarter:

Murphy punched it in to start the quarter extending their leading to 48-14. Hayesville did tack on a fourth-quarter touchdown, and both teams had several of their younger players see the field in the fourth quarter. The game ended with Murphy winning 54-21.

Game Notes:

-Sophomore quarterback Logan Caldwell played his best game yet and continues to grow into his role as QB1. His rapid growth rate will give this Hayesville team a chance to win some games down the stretch.

-Hayesville has come a long way since game one execution-wise. Look for Hayesville to get their first win next week at Andrews.

-Freshman Taylor McClure has been Hayesville’s leader defensively this year also saw some time on offense tonight scoring his first varsity touchdown. It appears Hayesville has found another weapon in the younger McClure, look for his role to continue to grow.

Notable Offensive Stats:

Logan Caldwell: 12/23 passing 137 yards 1TD, 2INT

Blake McClure: 17 rushes for 92 yards 1 TD

Kyle Lunsford: 8 rushes for 44 yards 5 receptions for 40 yards

Taylor McClure: 7 rushes for 38 yards 1 TD

Asher Brown: 2 receptions for 46 yards

Aver Leatherwood: 4 receptions for 52 yards 1 TD

Early Miscues Result in Season Opening Loss for Hayesville

Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

.The Hayesville Yellow Jackets football team played in their first football game of the year last night. They hosted the Franklin Panthers at home to open the season. First off it is great just to be able to play football this year for North Carolina athletes. With that said basketball and football had multiple weeks of overlap. This probably played a big part in Hayesvilles early game miscues, several bad snaps, and fumbles. Hayesville could not overcome the early mistakes as Franklin played solid winning 28-7.

1st Quarter:

In the first quarter, we saw Hayesville win the coin toss and take the aggressive approach choosing to receive. The first drive looked good picking up good yardage in the first few downs. Yet a false start penalty backed the Yellow Jackets up on third down and they were unable to complete their third-down pass. Hayesville looking at a 4th-8 to go chose to punt, a high snap on the punt led to the punter delaying his kick. It got partially deflected and resulted in only about a ten-yard net giving Franklin, great starting field position.

Franklin cashed in on that great field position by scoring quickly. Hayesville on their next drive went three and out once again having to punt. This time the snap went completely over the punter’s head into the endzone, with Franklin recovering it for a touchdown. Before you could even catch your breath the Yellow Jackets found themselves down 14-0.

2nd Quarter

Franklin had a good drive to end the first quarter and were on the Hayesville one-yard line to start the second quarter. They quickly punched it in on a QB sneak but missed the point-after try. Now leading 20-0 Franklin kicked off deep to Hayesville, who got a great return by senior Tyler Anderson out to their own 46-yard line. Blake McClure opened up the drive with a big 26-yard run, getting into Franklin territory. Later in the drive on Hayesvilles first play in the red zone Kyle Lunsford got some great blocking and ran for an 18-yard touchdown. Hayesville’s point-after try was good making the score 21-7 Franklin. The Panthers would tack on one more touchdown in the quarter making their lead 26-7 going into halftime.

3rd Quarter:

The second half opened with a long offensive drive by Franklin, but just as the Panthers were getting into the red zone Hayesville forced a big fumble. Avery Leatherwood recovered it for the Yellow Jackets giving Hayesville a chance to get back in it. After getting one first down Hayesville had to punt. Franklin got the ball back but went three and out. Hayesville muffed the ensuing punt giving it back to Franklin in Yellow Jacket territory. After a few first downs, Hayesville forced a turnover on downs by Franklin on the last play of the fourth quarter.

4th Quarter:

On the second play of the fourth quarter why trying to evade pressure Hayesville quarterback Logan Caldwell was sacked in the endzone for a safety. This brought the score to Franklin 28 Hayesville 7. Forced to punt off after the safety. Senior Blake McClure unleashed a howitzer of a punt and punted the ball 68 yards forcing Franklin to start at their own 12-yard line. Note while the ball did get a good bounce it had 55 yards of carry in the air. The rest of the fourth quarter saw the two teams trade the ball back and forth several times. There was no more scoring in the game though. Franklin finishing off the win 28-7 in both of the team’s first game of the season.

Post Game Interview with Head Hayesville Coach Chad McClure:

Q: Yall played better in the second half after the early miscues any thoughts coach?

A: I think we are as good as they are if we play the way we can.

Q: Thoughts on your son Taylor McClure, I know there was some debate whether as a freshman he would play varsity or not. Yet he played a great game had some big tackles for loss.

A: You know it is a great opportunity for him and those other freshmen, we had a lot of freshmen on the field tonight at times. It’s like I told them were only going to get better from here.

Q: First game of the season other than some bumps and bruises it looks like yall came out of the game healthy?

A: I have not talked to our trainer yet but it looks like we’re pretty good.

Q: Tough having to play Robbinsville as is Friday night, what does this week look like for you with only three days to prep?

A: We will come in tomorrow, make sure everyone is healing, we will stretch, watch the film and get in the weight room. Try to fix some things we need to work on after evaluating the film. We’re blessed to have an opportunity to play. It did not turn out like we wanted but we have to learn from that and move on.

Notable Hayesville Stats:

Blake McClure: 12 carries for 64 yards rushing

Kyle Lunsford: 2 carries for 19 yards rushing and 1 TD

Team: 6 fumbles, 3 lost

Yellow Jackets Take Down Rival Bulldogs

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets traveled to Murphy on Tuesday night to take on their rivals the Murphy Bulldogs. While in the past few years Hayesville has dominated this match up, you always have to come ready to play when facing a rival. The game was a close one throughout with Hayesville sustaining a narrow lead for the majority of the game. With some solid free throw shooting and good ball control Hayesville was able to secure a 64-56 win on the night.

Hayesville

Logan Caldwell lines up a three point shot.

In the first quarter Hayesville was executing well on offense and rebounding really well. Hayesville got scoring from five different players in the quarter. Led by Paul While who had 7 first quarter points. Hayesville after having been roughed up by Robbinsville in their last game came ready to be more physical in this contest. They did not shy away from the contact and there was plenty of contact from the first quarter all the way through the fourth quarter.

Hayesville carried an 18-11 lead going into the second quarter and appeared ready to extend their lead even further. That is until Murphy’s Dillon Brown got hot off the bench, scoring 13 2nd quarter points to keep the Bulldogs in it. Hayesville’s defense was focused on Murphy star Abram Abling leaving Brown several open looks from three. Credit to the Jackets though because after the half, they made adjustments and held Brown to only two second half points.

At the half Hayesville had a 33-28 lead and it looked to be anybody’s game. In the second half though Hayesville was getting steady contributions from multiple players. Each time Murphy made an adjustment it seemed another Hayesville player would step up. One of those players Brady Shook, had one of the better nights of his career. Shook scored 12 points and had a bunch of rebounds but possibly most importantly played great defense on Murphy’s star Abling all night. While Abling did have 19 points but he had a low percentage from the field and took lots of shots to get that 19. Hayesville ended the third quarter with a 48-41 lead.

Hayesville

Brady Shooks fights off a defender for a tough 2 points.

Going into the fourth quarter Murphy’s bench received a technical, gifting Hayesville two free throws and possession to start the quarter. This hurt the Bulldogs as it allowed Hayesville to extend their lead even more. Making the Bulldogs comeback attempt that much tougher. The game was incredibly physical and while no flagrants were called on the night several times referees discussed the possibility. Fans on both sides probably wanted a few flagrants called, yet it’s early in the year and just as the players are getting into their groove, so are the referees.

Hayesville possessed the ball well and hit their free throws down the stretch. This allowed them to handle any comeback attempt and put the game away winning 64-56 over their rival.

Postgame quotes from Hayesville head coach Michael Cottrell:

“Thought it was a very good road win”

When asked about Brady Shooks performance

“That’s what we expect to see and that’s what we have been seeing in practice. Was glad to see him play well he had a really tough assignment”

“We need to clean up some of the stuff we are struggling with early in the season, we don’t have long but we clean them up and we will have a nice team.”

Leading scorers:

Kolbe Ashe: 19 points

Brady Shooks: 12 points

Paul White: 11 points

Kyle Lunsford 10 points

Hayesville Yellow Jackets Win Tough Road Game

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets traveled to Graham Co. to take on the Robbinsville Black Knights on Friday night. While many in the conference ended up being snowed out, these two teams put on a show. It was a hotly contested game that was back and forth for much of the first half. Hayesville took a lead into halftime but Robbinsville chipped away at it in the second half. The game ended up going down to the final minute. Behind star point guard Kolbe Ashe’s 32 points the Yellow Jackets were able to pull out a tough road win 60-56.

Hayesville

Asher Brown makes a free throw.

In the first quarter Hayesvilles offense got off to a slow start. While getting some good looks they just couldn’t get anything to fall. Head Coach Michael Cottrell did a full five player swap hoping to get their energy going. It worked out well and while the Jackets entered the 2nd quarter down 11-9. The second unit brought the team’s energy level up and catapulted the team into a great second quarter.

In the second quarter Hayesville came out in a three quarters court press and gave Robbinsville fits. In years past Hayesville has run their 1-2-2 press full court but in this game they dropped it back just a little. It worked to perfection and Robbinsvilles turnovers were turning into Yellow Jacket touchdowns so to speak. This allowed the Yellow Jackets to get Kolbe Ashe going who led the Yellow Jackets with 11 second quarter points. The team scored 22 in the second quarter while holding Robbinsville to only 10. This allowed the Yellow Jackets to carry a 10 point lead into the half.

In the third quarter it looked to be much of the same for Hayesville who looked like they may run away with it. Then Robbinsville started to get hot and seemingly couldn’t miss a shot. As well the few shots they did miss they seemed to get almost every offensive rebound. It was a very physical game, something to be expected when playing the defending football state champions. While the Hayesville lead got all the way up to 13 by quarters end the Black Knights had drawn within five points.

Hayesville

Logan Caldwell makes a fast break layup.

Going into the fourth quarter Hayesville knew they were in for a battle. Many casual Hayesville fans may have wondered after losing some players to transfer who would be the go to guy this year. Kolbe Ashe answered that question in a big way carrying the Yellow Jackets in the game. Especially the fourth quarter where he had 12 of the teams 17 fourth quarter points. In the last four minutes of the game Hayesville went four low leaving Ashe up top by himself to go iso. It worked great for the Yellow Jackets as Robbinsville had no answer for Ashe.

In the closing seconds of the game when Robbinsville was fouling Hayesville to try and get back in it. Hayesville responded by hitting some clutch free throws. Going 5-6 in their last six attempts was huge with Ashe hitting two, and senior Blake McClure hitting two as well. This allowed Hayesville to survive and win against a tough opponent on the road 60-56.

Post Game Quotes:

Head Coach Michael Cottrell

“Great win on the road against a really athletic hard fighting Robbinsville team.”

“Very typical of what happens when you come up here in the Smoky Mountain Conference.” “They play you, a very competitive league, away games are always tough, especially tough for us.”

“I was very proud of our team for figuring it out late, winning a game on the road which will help us later.”

“You have to win on the road to be in the hunt, someone will lose one up here, a good team will lose up here, you have to come to play when you come to Robbinsville.”

Leading Scorers:

Kolbe Ashe: 32 Points

Kyle Lunsford: 11 Points

Hayesville Yellow Jackets Win Big in Season Opener

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets hosted the Nantahala Hawks on Tuesday night. This was their home opening game, as well as their first game of the season. The Yellow Jackets had great energy and it was obvious they were excited to be back on the court after an extended offseason. Hayesville was the superior team in this game and played like it all night long.

Hayesville

Tyler Jones finishes the fastbreak.

The Yellow Jackets started off with a bang to start the season. Senior Brady Shook stole a pass and dunked the ball with a two hand tomahawk. Normally this would have brought thunderous cheers from Hayesvilles student section. Yet with Covid restrictions and only twenty five fans in the gym it was a much different environment. Yet that did not stop the Yellow Jackets high paced action all night.

The first half belonged completely to the Yellow Jackets, who rotated a full five players regularly. Both the first and second units ran the floor hard and had numerous fast break finishes. Between good defense and the fast break the Hawks got down early and never had a chance to get back in it. The first half closed with Hayesville leading 50-20.

Hayesville

Eli Roberts rises above his opponent for a strong finish.

In the second half Hayesville went on an early run stretching their lead out to 40 which resulted in a running clock. Give the Hawks credit they did have several deep threes on the night. They only had one less three than Hayesville on the night but could not get anything to fall inside. Hayesville had the size advantage and used it to keep their opponents from attacking the basket. The game finished with Hayesville winning 88-36, getting their season off to the right start.

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets (1-0) travel to Graham county on Friday evening to take on the Robbinsville Black Knights. This will be their first conference game of the year for Hayesville. As the defending champions it should be a good test to see if Hayesville has what it takes to defend their crown.

Yellow Jackets face of With the Panthers in preseason scrimmage

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
hayesville

.The Hayesville Yellow Jackets hosted the Franklin Panthers in their one and only preseason scrimmage of the year. Being that it was a scrimmage the format was a little different than what fans may be used to seeing. They played four full quarters and one extra four minute period in the scrimmage. While a box score was kept there were no foul limits for players. As well they used a modified free throw method for the bonus. All stats shared in this article are considered unofficial and do not count towards season long totals.

Hayesville

Logan Caldwell makes a three.

The Yellow Jackets, only lost one senior but did lose several players to transfers. This is to be expected when the NCHSAA postponed seasons for all sports. Some players looked elsewhere when the uncertainty surrounding North Carolina High school sports arose. One has to wonder what this season would be like for all North Carolina teams if they would have played without all these schedule changes. Especially when surrounding states have played full seasons with no major issues. The safety of players, coaches and fans always has to be the top priority. Yet with the surrounding states having had successful fall seasons one has to truly consider the NCHSAA’s reasoning.

Onto the scrimmage, the Yellow Jackets were facing a very talented Franklin team returning most of their key pieces from last year’s team. Hayesville struggled to get shots to fall in the first quarter, while even with good defense Franklin was hitting just about everything. The Panthers got out to a double digit lead to end the first quarter.

In the second quarter Hayesville was beginning to find their shooting touch and played Franklin very close. It was evident that Hayesville was trying to incorporate some new pieces. While the early returns may have been slim, the talent was evident. Players like young freshman Asher Brown was all over the court and his athleticism was easy to see. When head coach Michael Cottrell is able to get some of this young talent to mesh the sky will be the limit for this Yellow Jacket team.

In the third quarter junior point guard Kolbe Ashe decided to take control of the game for a stretch and just show how lethal he could be. His nine third quarter points paced the Jackets to their highest scoring quarter. Their first quarter in which they outscored Franklin.

In the fourth quarter both coaches let their reserves see significant minutes. It saw Franklin outscore the Yellow Jackets in the quarter. It was good to see several of the Yellow Jackets seeing their first significant minutes in their varsity career not back down from their opportunity. Players like Rudy Seaker blocking several shots and chipping in five points could lead to important opportunities later in the season.

In the extra period the teams played, it was great to see the Yellow Jackets dominate. It was evident their conditioning is on point even while having to wear masks this early in the season. It was also great to see young sophomore Kyle Lunsford step up in a big way for the Jackets. Lunsford flashed at times last year as a freshman. With expanded minutes this season though it would be great for the team to continue seeing what they saw from him against Franklin. He led all Yellow Jackets scorers with what would have been a career high 22 points if this was an official game.

The Yellow Jackets may have lost this scrimmage unofficially. Yet they were playing possibly one of the best teams they will face all year. It was a great measuring stick for Coach Cottrell. This will allow him to have his team ready for the season opener next week. They will host the Nantahala Hawks on Tuesday, January 5th.

Hayesville Yellow Jackets third round playoff preview

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets will be traveling to Chatham Charter on Saturday, Feb. 29, to play in the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs. The Yellow Jackets beat Chatham Charter last year in the playoffs. Yet, last year Chatham Charter traveled to Hayesville while this year it is reversed. Hayesville will be making the five-plus hour trip to Chatham, it will be their first road game in the playoffs.

First Hayesville need to handle the road trip, long trips can be tough. You cannot stay focused for the entirety of such a long trip, but need to find the right time to start dialing it in. Hayesville will need to find a way to slow down senior Jordan Hamilton who is averaging 20.2 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game. Hamilton is also averaging 19 points and 12.5 rebounds in the playoffs. As well, Chatham Charter has five players averaging eight points per game. Four of those five players are seniors as well so they are a very experienced team.

Here is what Hayesville head coach Mike Cottrell had to say about the upcoming third-round game.

  1. Big win over Pine Lake Prep any thoughts on your teams second round win?

Great win in front of an inspired hometown crowd.  Team played tough down the stretch and found some things on defense that were effective.  Team is getting better at adjusting to game and different opponents.

  1. What do you know about Chatham Charter your second round opponent?

Very good team.  Play well together. Great ball movement.  Share the ball. Have a very skilled smart post player that leads them.  Will have to figure a way to guard him effectively.

  1. How do quick turnarounds only 1 day between games and a long road trip change how you get ready for games?

We will keep things as normal as possible.  Same practice plan. Kids are focused and used to playing this type of schedule.  Travel is always tough but I think our people will show up and support this team like they have done all year.  Have to go on the road and win a few to do what they want. Great experience.

  1. What does your team need to do to win and advance on Saturday?

Continue to play great defense.  Adjust to game situations and continue to get better at execution on both ends of the floor.

Here is what Chatham Charter head coach Jason Messier had to say about the upcoming third-round game.

  1. What do you know about your 3rd round opponent Hayesville?

We played them in the second round of the state playoffs last year, so we have some familiarity with them.

  1. Describe your team a little, what do you do well, do you play fast slow, like to press etc.

We have a good group of young men that play hard and leave everything they have on the court.

  1. How is your team’s overall health coming into this game?

We are as healthy as we have been all season.

  1. What does your team need to do to win on Saturday?

Play our game. Limit turnovers, rebound and play solid defense.

This game has the potential to be the best game in the state on Saturday. TeamFYNSports will be giving updates every quarter and multiple updates in the fourth quarter.

Hayesville Yellow Jackets win conference tournament

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Wednesday night the Hayesville Yellow Jackets traveled to Rosman to take on the Cherokee Braves in the conference tournament final. This was on short notice as potential winter weather moved all these championship games from Friday to Wednesday night. Hayesville was looking to avenge their only conference loss of the year when Cherokee upset them last week. Hayesville played with consistency and poise all night long leading to their 62-47 point victory.

Hayesville

Junior Blakes McClure drives strong to the rim.

In the first quarter Cherokee came out firing hitting some early threes. Hayesville didn’t quite have their offense running smoothly early in the game but were able to keep it close. While it felt like Cherokee had outplayed the Yellow Jackets in the first quarter somehow they only led by 1 point at the end of the quarter 17-16.

In the second quarter Hayesvilles consistent play started to push Cherokee and they couldn’t keep up. Cherokee is a very streaky team in terms of their offense. If your defense falters they will quickly put up five threes on you and take a double digit lead. At times though due to lack of offensive structure they struggle to find easy points. Hayesvilles great defense and rebounding really negatively affected Cherokee.

Give credit to sophomore Kolbe Ashe he did not come off the floor a single time on this night as is often the case. His poise and leadership is a big reason for the Yellow Jackets consistency. While he doesnt always put up flashy numbers he is the conductor of the train for Hayesville basketball. All this led to Hayesville having a 27-26 lead going into halftime.

Hayesville

Sophomore Kolbe Ashe sets up the offense.

In the third quarter Hayesville really started to force their will on the opponent and was flat out outplaying them. They were getting defensive stops, outrebounding the Braves and executing well on offense. With a few late shots though Cherokee was able to cut the lead to seven, trailing the Yellow Jackets 44-37 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter it appeared Hayesville was getting ready to run away with it, the referees stepped and made sure that wouldn’t happen. In fairness it was one referee calling two technicals and allowing a lay up to count for Cherokee well after the whistle was blown for the second technical. This gave Cherokee an undeserved 8 point run and gave them a 1 point lead.

Hayesville overcame the run though and battled through adversity to regain control of the game. Running their patented flex offense on three straight possessions, the cousin duo of juniors Blake and Hayden McClure went on their own little run. Each possession Blake hit Hayden on a cut to block with Hayden finishing each layup opportunity. This gave Hayden 6 straight points and Blake 3 straight assists. Hayesville hit free throws down the stretch and ended up winning handily 62-47.

Jake McTaggart 18 points

Kolbe Ashe 13 points

Hayesville will next play NCHSAA state playoffs but the opponent is unknown at this time. Check the fynsports social media sites for updates on games and game times which are scheduled to be released sunday afternoon.

Yellow Jackets advance to conference tournament final

Hayesville Basketball, Hayesville High, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets took the long trip up to Rosman to compete in the conference tournament semifinals last night. They took on the Swain Co. Maroon Devils who they had previously beaten twice this year. The Devils came to play though and gave the Yellow Jackets all they could handle in the first half. Yet behind star sophomore Jake McTaggarts monster night the Yellow Jackets ran away with it in the second half winning it 79-63.

Hayesville

Junior Hayen McClure fights through traffic for a bucket.

In the first quarter Hayesville and Swain traded punches, neither team having a noticeable edge. Hayesville had trouble getting good post touches in their last matchup with Swain, that was not the case on this night. McTaggart had 8 first quarter points pacing the Jackets early helping them to a first quarter lead of 13 to 9.

In the second quarter Hayesville stopped forcing as many three points shots and really started to spread the ball around. This led to better offensive output in the quarter with 6 different Yellow Jackets scoring. Yet as the Jackets offensive improved so did the Devils who give them credit hit some very tough contested shots in the contest. Yet Hayesville outscored them by two in the second quarter giving them 33 to 27 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Hayesville continued their hot scoring and blitzed the Maroon Devils for 26 third quarter points. It wasn’t that the Devils were not doing their part to try and play right with Hayesville but the Yellow Jackets offense couldn’t be stopped. The third quarter ended with Hayesville in complete control leading 59-44. It has been said all year that when this Hayesville team shoots well, combined with their typically good defense their ceiling is as high as any team in the state.

Hayesville

Sophomore Kolbe Ashe brings the ball up the floor.

The Yellow Jackets got scoring from seven different players in the quarter making them that much harder to stop. Hayesville fans have grown accustomed to watching Kolbe Ashe and McTaggart have regular 20 plus points nights. Yet there have been many nights when that second or third scorer can be either Juniors Blake or Hayden McClure, Paul White, Brady Shook or senior Mark Cothren. Each of the previously mentioned players have all had at least one game of over 13 points this year. When Hayesville gets good output from a third scorer they become a pick your poison team of who to guard on defense.

The fourth quarter saw each team’s role players getting time and the game ending in casual fashion as Hayesvilles lead was too much to overcome. That isn’t to say they left any doubt scoring another 20 points in the fourth quarter. Junior Paul White led the way in the fourth quarter with 5 points as six different Yellow Jackets scored in the quarter.

What set the tone on this night was sophomore Jake McTaggart having a career night with 26 points 25 rebounds and 6 blocks. After struggling against Swain in their last matchup McTaggart left no doubt that more often than not he can’t be stopped. Swain has good size with a player as tall and thicker than McTaggart, but McTaggart showed as he has all year he is not just a big post player. He is very skilled with great post moves, strong ball handling, a very underrated shooter and a determined rebounder.

Hayesville

Freshman Kyle Lunsford outmuscles his opponent for a score.

Hayesville leaders for the night:

Jake McTaggart 26 points 25 rebounds and 6 blocks

Kolbe Ashe 15 points

Paul White 8 points

Brady Shook 8 points

Hayesville will next play in the conference tournament final on Friday against the winner of 2 seed Cherokee and 3 seed Andrews who play tonight.

Yellow Jackets burn up the nets in win against Murphy

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Tuesday night January 21st, Hayesville hosted rival the Murphy Bulldogs. The last time these two teams played it was a hotly contested matchup with Hayesville pulling out a close victory at the end. This game was a different story, Hayesville came out shooting hot and stayed that way for almost the entire game. Murphy could never catch up and Hayesville cruised to an easy 68-38 win.

Hayesville

Sophomore Jake McTaggart lines one up from three.

In the first quarter Hayesville started hot scoring 22 points. Murphy played back and forth with Hayesville in the first few minutes but then Hayesville Junior Blake McClure erupted with a crazy hot streak. By himself he tied Murphys scoring total in the first quarter with 14 points going 4 of 7 from three. It was good to see McClure do this as he had been in a bit of an offensive slump. Hayesville finished the quarter with a 22-14 lead and would look to continue their hot start in the second quarter.

Hayesville still got good production offensively in the second quarter but put a defensive stranglehold on Murphy. They held the Bulldogs to only 5 points in the second quarter and seemingly put the game away by halftime. Hayesville had a 37-19 lead going into the half and would continue to increase their lead in the third quarter.

At the start of the third Hayesville immediately extended their lead to ensure Murphy would have no chance of a comeback. Six different players scored in the quarter as Hayesville was getting contributions from everyone. On a night when they celebrated head coach Michael Cottrells 400th win the team was clicking on all cylinders. The quarter ended with the Yellow Jackets doubling the Bulldogs effort scoring wise 56-28.

In the 4th quarter Hayesville was able to get good efforts from many of their reserves. Getting buckets from five different players and not letting the Bulldogs gain any ground. Hayesvilles role players given the opportunity played well even with many of the Murphy starters still in the game. In a runaway Hayesville won 68-38 leaving no doubt of who the better team was this night.

Hayesville leaders for the night:

Blake McClure 16 points

Jake McTaggart 16 points

Mark Cothren 9 points

Brady Shook 8 points

Kolbe Ashe 7 points

This Hayesville team is starting to round into form and that should be a scary proposition for future opponents. This Hayesville has as high as a ceiling as any team in the area and even though they are still very young expectations are starting to rise.

Hayesville will next play on the road, at Robbinsville to take on the Black Knights Friday January 24th. The last time these two teams Hayesville was given a test by the Knights who will be looking to defend home court.

Hayesville Yellow Jackets win seventh in a row

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Friday night January the 17th, Hayesville (12-2, 7-0) hosted the Nantahala Hawks (6-10) in a non conference matchup. The Yellow Jackets faced the Hawks in their first game of the year. Once again like their first game Hayesville had too much firepower for the Hawks to handle. Hayesville secured their 13th victory of the year 82-56.

Hayesville

Junior Rudy Seaker makes a free throw.

In the first half the Hawks looked like they would give Hayesville all they could handle. They were hot from three and had multiple players connecting from well beyond the three point line. Nantahala actually held a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Hayesville punched back with some big offense of their own. They got 5 points each from sophomore Kolbe Ashe and junior Paul White. Yet they made some defensive adjustments and held the Hawk to only 9 second quarter points. This allowed Hayesville to turn things around and take 37-29 point lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter you could tell that Nantahala only having seven players was starting to wear down. They did not have much size and struggled to handle Hayesvilles star sophomore Jake McTaggart. He had 13 third quarter points and all but put the game away for the Yellow Jackets. They took a 57-44 point lead into 4th looking to finish the game strong.

In the fourth Hayesville went a little deeper into their bench some Nantahala did not have the option to do. Hayesville got strong contributions from Juniors Rudy Seeker and Tyler Jones helping put the game away. Hayesville extended their lead in the fourth and left the Hawks with no opportunity to come back. The final score was Hayesville 82 to Nantahala 56.

Hayesville leaders for the night:

Kolbe Ashe 23 points with 6 threes

Jake McTaggart 19 points

Paul White 9 points

Hayden McClure 9 points

Hayesville will next play at home, hosting the Murphy Bulldogs on Tuesday January 21st in their second matchup of the year.

Hayesville boys extend winning streak to six games

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets took the long trip to play at Cherokee on Tuesday night, Jan. 15. The Cherokee Indians have had an up and down season but were ready for the Yellow Jackets and you could feel the big game atmosphere in the gym. Hayesville had one of their best scoring nights of the year and were able to defeat the Indians 71-54. Hayesville did not lose their lead after taking it in the second quarter and their consistent play was too much for Cherokee to handle.

HayesvilleIn the first quarter Hayesville was led by Junior Hayden McClure who got the Yellow Jackets off to a good start with his early offense. The quarter was a back and forth affair with Cherokee protecting their home court looking like they would be tough to defeat on this night. The quarter finished with the Indians holding a 16-13 lead but it was still anybody’s game.

This game had important conference positioning on the line, Hayesville had just one game ago moved into first place. While Cherokee was looking to show despite a few early losses that they belonged in the first place conversation.

Hayesville

Junior Hayden McClure finishes on the fast break.

On to the second quarter where the Yellow Jackets used great offensive showing to overtake the Indians small lead. Cherokee was wanting to play a quick up and down game which the Yellow Jackets did not mind beating the Indians at their own game. Thanks to good defense Hayesville was able to hold Cherokee to only 12 points in the quarter. While scoring 19 of their own thanks to some easy transition baskets Hayesville took a 32-28 lead.

Coming into the third quarter both teams made some adjustments and it Cherokee may chipped away at the Hayesville lead. Cherokee thanks to a three at the beginning and end of the quarter was still down but only by three to end the quarter. The Yellow Jackets leading 46-43 at the end of the quarter knew it would be decided in the 4th quarter.

Hayesville who has played in so many close games this year is starting to show that its paying off. They knew they needed a strong 4th quarter to win the game and they did not disappoint. The Yellow Jackets scored 25 fourth quarter points to put away the Indians leaving them no chance. Hayesville finished strong by going to their Sophomore duo Kolbe Ashe and Jake McTaggart. They led the way for a Yellow Jacket victory 71-54, aided by some great free-throw shooting.

Hayesville leaders for the night:

Kolbe Ashe, sophomore: 20 points

Jake McTaggart, sophomore: 17 points

Hayden McClure, junior: 13 points

Mark Cothren, senior: nine points (three 3-pointers)

After shooting below 50 percent as a team against Andrews, Hayesville turned it around tonight. Cherokee tried to foul late hoping for some Hayesville misses but Hayesville answered by shooting 78% from the line going 14-of-18 on the night. Hayesville will next play at home, hosting the Nantahala Hawks on Friday night, Jan. 17.

Hayesville boys win to take first place in conference

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Friday night, January 10th the Hayesville Yellow Jackets hosted the undefeated Andrews Wildcats. Andrews while carrying a gaudy record had yet to play much competition that had tested them. They had played a very good, but up and down Cherokee team earlier in the week. Yet it is known Cherokee has never been much for defense and that’s a tough way to play against a team like Andrews. Hayesville was ready to bring great defense and play at a pace that would frustrate Andrews.

Hayesville

Junior Blake McClure leads the offensive break.

Head coach Michael Cottrell said pregame that the key to the game was contain, contain, contain. To make Andrew’s take contested jumpers and not finish easy at the rim. They have many great athletes who will happily beat people of the dribble and finish at the rim.

Early in the game it looked like Hayesvilles plan may not be a good one. Wildcat Junior Kabe Ellis scored Andrews first 11 points of the night. Ellis had four first half threes and looked like he may lead his team to a hard fought win. Even through his great scoring burst Hayesvilles steady offense helped them to a first quarter lead. That coupled with sophomore Jake McTaggart matching Ellis with 11 points of his own, Hayesville took a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter the games initial up and down pace really changed with Hayesville controlling much of the ball. Andrews was looking for quick scoring and transition buckets. Very few were available for them as Hayesville got back on defense and made nothing easy. As well they were tiring Andrews out when they possessed the ball. Hayesville was patient and at times would run offense for a full 60 seconds. Waiting for Andrews to finally get impatient and jump a lane at the wrong time resulted in Hayesville getting some easy baskets. Hayesville took a 27-23 point lead into the half.

Hayesville

Sophomore Jake McTaggart sets up the defense with a post move.

Coming into the third quarter Hayesville still controlled the pace and contained as their coach wanted them to. Andrews hit many tough shots on the night but had very few easy scoring chances. Hayesville played tight man to man defense all night and rarely got caught out of position. It was another slow scoring quarter with Hayesville grinding it out on both sides of the ball. The quarter ended with Hayesville having a 36-31 point lead.

Coming into the fourth quarter the pace picked up a little and the scoring increased. Andrews even had a one point lead during the quarter. It appeared that they would steal a victory at Hayesville. Yet Hayesville had one last push in them that was too much for the Wildcats to handle. I would be remiss not to mention how fantastic Hayesvilles sophomore point guard Kolbe Ashe was. Not only did he control the pace the entire night he played fantastic defense on Ellis.

Free throw shooting was a struggle for both teams all night but Hayesville made some important ones at the end. McTaggart and freshman Kyle Lunsford each went two for two at the free throw lines in the waning minutes of the game. In the games closing minutes Ashes great defense on Ellis and tired Wildcat legs left them needing one or two more buckets they never found. Hayesville finished the game with great defense and just enough timely points to win 54-49.

Hayesville

Sophomore Kolbe Ashe beats a defender to finish at the rim.

Point leaders:

Jake McTaggart 23 points

Kolbe Ashe 15 points

Kyle Lunsford 7 points

It was a great night in Hayesville, former Yellow Jacket star Amanda Thompson had her jersey retired. The boys team did their part to complete a sweep of all the games and now sit alone in first place of the conference.
