Hayesville Yellow Jackets win seventh in a row

On Friday night January the 17th, Hayesville (12-2, 7-0) hosted the Nantahala Hawks (6-10) in a non conference matchup. The Yellow Jackets faced the Hawks in their first game of the year. Once again like their first game Hayesville had too much firepower for the Hawks to handle. Hayesville secured their 13th victory of the year 82-56.

In the first half the Hawks looked like they would give Hayesville all they could handle. They were hot from three and had multiple players connecting from well beyond the three point line. Nantahala actually held a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Hayesville punched back with some big offense of their own. They got 5 points each from sophomore Kolbe Ashe and junior Paul White. Yet they made some defensive adjustments and held the Hawk to only 9 second quarter points. This allowed Hayesville to turn things around and take 37-29 point lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter you could tell that Nantahala only having seven players was starting to wear down. They did not have much size and struggled to handle Hayesvilles star sophomore Jake McTaggart. He had 13 third quarter points and all but put the game away for the Yellow Jackets. They took a 57-44 point lead into 4th looking to finish the game strong.
In the fourth Hayesville went a little deeper into their bench some Nantahala did not have the option to do. Hayesville got strong contributions from Juniors Rudy Seeker and Tyler Jones helping put the game away. Hayesville extended their lead in the fourth and left the Hawks with no opportunity to come back. The final score was Hayesville 82 to Nantahala 56.

Lady Yellow Jackets cruise to 10th win

On Friday night January the 17th, Hayesville (9-5, 4-2) hosted the Nantahala Lady Hawks (2-13) in a non conference matchup. The Lady Yellow Jackets had already defeated the Lady Hawks in their first game of the year and Fridays results was much of the same. Both teams played hard but Hayesville was just the more talented team winning 73-11.

In the first half the Lady Yellow Jackets got off to a fast start and pushed out to an early lead. They were aided by turnovers from Nantahala and finished strong on several fast break opportunities. All of the Lady Yellow Jackets were able to contribute to a solid first half. Going into the halftime break the game was all but over with the Lady Yellow Jackets leading 54-5 at the half.
In the second half things moved much quicker thanks to a running clock. Every Lady Yellow Jacket scored in the contest. It was good to see both teams playing hard but Hayesville overmatched their opponents on this night winning 73-11. Hayesville now has 10 wins on the season securing another double digit win season.

Hayesville boys extend winning streak to six games

The Hayesville Yellow Jackets took the long trip to play at Cherokee on Tuesday night, Jan. 15. The Cherokee Indians have had an up and down season but were ready for the Yellow Jackets and you could feel the big game atmosphere in the gym. Hayesville had one of their best scoring nights of the year and were able to defeat the Indians 71-54. Hayesville did not lose their lead after taking it in the second quarter and their consistent play was too much for Cherokee to handle.
In the first quarter Hayesville was led by Junior Hayden McClure who got the Yellow Jackets off to a good start with his early offense. The quarter was a back and forth affair with Cherokee protecting their home court looking like they would be tough to defeat on this night. The quarter finished with the Indians holding a 16-13 lead but it was still anybody’s game.
This game had important conference positioning on the line, Hayesville had just one game ago moved into first place. While Cherokee was looking to show despite a few early losses that they belonged in the first place conversation.

On to the second quarter where the Yellow Jackets used great offensive showing to overtake the Indians small lead. Cherokee was wanting to play a quick up and down game which the Yellow Jackets did not mind beating the Indians at their own game. Thanks to good defense Hayesville was able to hold Cherokee to only 12 points in the quarter. While scoring 19 of their own thanks to some easy transition baskets Hayesville took a 32-28 lead.
Coming into the third quarter both teams made some adjustments and it Cherokee may chipped away at the Hayesville lead. Cherokee thanks to a three at the beginning and end of the quarter was still down but only by three to end the quarter. The Yellow Jackets leading 46-43 at the end of the quarter knew it would be decided in the 4th quarter.
Hayesville who has played in so many close games this year is starting to show that its paying off. They knew they needed a strong 4th quarter to win the game and they did not disappoint. The Yellow Jackets scored 25 fourth quarter points to put away the Indians leaving them no chance. Hayesville finished strong by going to their Sophomore duo Kolbe Ashe and Jake McTaggart. They led the way for a Yellow Jacket victory 71-54, aided by some great free-throw shooting.

After shooting below 50 percent as a team against Andrews, Hayesville turned it around tonight. Cherokee tried to foul late hoping for some Hayesville misses but Hayesville answered by shooting 78% from the line going 14-of-18 on the night. Hayesville will next play at home, hosting the Nantahala Hawks on Friday night, Jan. 17.

Charles Gary Bull: Obituary
Obituaries January 25, 2020Charles Gary Bull, age 77 of Murphy passed away Friday, January 24, 2020. He was the son of the late Wallace and Grace Bull. Charles was a great story teller and spent alot of time on his computer. He had a great love for all his animals and his home in North Carolina.
Charles is survived by his wife, Roberta Bull; son, Jim St.James; brother, John Bull; sister-in-law, Helen Bull; sister, Marlene Parella; grandchild, Rebecca St.James and many nieces and nephews.

Eugene Stiles: Obituary

Eugene Stiles, age 86 of Andrews, NC passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Erlanger Medical Center.
He was born in Swain County, NC to the late Harley and Arizona Styles Stiles. Eugene was a self-employed rock mason. He retired from Four Square Community Action. Eugene was a member of the McClelland Cove Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Stiles; one brother, Colbern Stiles; two infant brothers; and two sisters, Betty Cagley and Lois Stiles.
He is survived by his daughter, Emogene Stiles of Ellijay, GA; one sister, Hazel Hodge of Andrews.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Steve West will officiate. Music will be provided by Ken and Debra Wiggins. Burial will be in the Valleytown Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12-2 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews.

Lois Browning Woodard: Obituary
Obituaries January 22, 2020Lois Browning Woodard, age 92 of Brasstown, NC passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020.
She was born in Harlan, KY to late Boyd and Rachel Jones. Lois loved going to church, her family and visiting others. She was member of Hickory Stand United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Paul L. Browning, Jr.; two daughters, Sherri and Nova Browning; four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived one son, Mike Browning and wife Kris of Cincinnati, OH; one daughter, Marla Browning Heberger and husband Steve of Brasstown; one sister, Linda McClain of Adairsville, GA; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church. Rev. Bryan Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Teresa Diane Boring: Obituary

Teresa Diane Boring, 62, of Murphy, North Carolina passed away Monday, January 20, 2020 at her residence. She was a native of Maryville, Tennessee before moving to Cherokee County, North Carolina. She worked as a medical assistant and secretary in the healthcare industry. Teresa loved her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church. She enjoyed her mission trips in Belize. She never met a stranger and left everyone with a smile. Teresa enjoyed cooking, crafting, and working in her flowers, but most of all, she loved spending time with her husband.
She was the daughter of Louie and Dixie Luttrell Harris of Maryville, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Moore.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her loving husband, Ernie Boring; two daughters, Amber Wills and husband, Justin of Hiwassee Dam, North Carolina and Erin McFaddin and husband, Brandon of Alexander, North Carolina; two sons, Isaac Boring and wife, Anne of Hiwassee Dam, and Barry Moore and wife, Andrea of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a sister, Kelly White and husband, David of Maryville; a brother, Ronald Harris and wife, Chris of Maryville; six grandchildren, Christian, Jake, Savannah, Jared, Lillian, and Brody; two nieces, Cara and Caitlin; and two nephews, Britt and Chandler.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2020 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Revs. Tim Dickey and Richard Roberson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5-5:50 Friday evening, January 24 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.

The Lady Yellow Jackets fall in conference matchup at Cherokee

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets traveled to take on the Cherokee Lady Indians on Tuesday night, Jan. 14. Cherokee won the game 74-56 with a fantastic offensive output that the Lady Yellow Jackets could not keep up with. Cherokee is a notoriously difficult place to play with one of the best home court advantages in the conference. Rarely is there a time when teams travel to Cherokee that they do not have a large crowd supporting the home team.

In the first quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets did not get off to best start but did manage to score 11 points in the quarter. Yet because of some good defense they were able to hold the Lady Indians to only 13 points. Hayesville finished the quarter trailing 13-11 with it still being very much anyone’s game.
In the second quarter Hayesville was able to increase their offensive output scoring 15 points in the quarter. Yet it mattered little as Cherokee’s offense got hot and managed to score an incredible 22 points in the quarter. Hayesville defense was not perfect but credit the Lady Indians who made some tough shots. Hayesville went into halftime looking to make some adjustments with Cherokee holding a 35-26 lead.
In the third quarter though Cherokee carried over their hot shooting and increased their lead. It was starting to look like it just was not the Lady Yellow Jackets night. Hayesville ended the quarter trailing 56-40 and seemingly did not have an answer for the Lady Indians on this night.

In the fourth quarter with a 16-point lead, the Lady Indians offense just continued to produce. To the tune of 18 fourth quarter points. Hayesville managed their best scoring quarter of the night with 16 points themselves. Unfortunately Cherokee was able to control the pace the majority of the night and won 74-56. These two teams will meet again and don’t be surprised if you see Hayesville play them much closer in the comfort of their own gym.

Former Hayesville star Amanda Thompson honored

On Friday night January the 10th former Hayesville Lady Yellow Jacket Amanda Thompson had her jersey retired. To say Thompson had a noteworthy career would minimized all that she truly accomplished. Not only did Thompson have a storied career at Hayesville, she went on to possibly have an even better one in college.
It is difficult to describe the challenges she overcame to accomplish all that she did. She went from a small 1a North Carolina high school to playing at the highest level in college. Not only was she on the team she was a star, starting all but one game in her college career. You may ask what was the one game she did not start. Her junior year she told her coach to let a senior start in her place on senior night. That describes the type of person she was/is, selfless and team first always. She was a four year captain while at Mercer as well, very few if ever get chosen to be a captain as a freshman but that speaks to her leadership ability.
One could write 20,000 words on the type of person and player Amanda Thompson was in her career. Rather though were going to share an exclusive interview with her as well as her former high school coach and included a list of her most notable accomplishments in college and high school.
Exclusive Q&A with Amanda Thompson
Q: What is your fondest memory of playing basketball at Hayesville?
A: My junior year when we made it to the final four in Greensboro it snowed. We got to stay a couple extra days because of the snow. Each morning my roommates Rachel Benson, Stephanie Patton and I solved the newspaper crossword. We beat Cherokee in the elite eight but lost to Bishop McGuiness in the semifinals. That whole trip with the team and everybody was so much fun.
Q: What do you miss the most about playing for Hayesville?
A: The community but now it’s nice because I don’t have to miss it, I get to be back in it, with teaching and getting to help with the team. At Mercer I had it there but it was just different. It was not as homey as being at Hayesville, just the community, how much everybody is behind our team and players.
Q: Do you still keep in touch with any of your teammates?
A: Yes, especially now that I am at home I get to see many of them.
Q: How big of a difference was playing at Mercer vs. playing at Hayesville?
A: I know I talked about the community of playing at Hayesville, I think Mercer had a similar community because of the small school environment so that was awesome. Obviously though playing in college it’s just a higher level, a faster pace and more intense. Yet there is something about playing high school basketball that’s so much fun.
Q: I know you talked about it a little. Do you plan to stay in coaching, in basketball in general, did you have any professional opportunities?
A: If I had wanted to play professionally I could have gone overseas but it wasn’t what I was interested in. I planned on pursuing an engineering career but God had other plans for me, which I am very thankful for. I have taken a teaching job at Hayesville and I am loving it.
Q:High school and college what was your biggest accomplishment?
A:Team accomplishment In high school it was obviously the final four year that was awesome. Individually it was reaching the 1000 rebound mark. As a team it would be going undefeated two years straight in conference. Again individual accomplishment in college it would have to be a toss up between 1st team Academic all american and SOCON female athlete of the year.
Exclusive Q&A with Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets head coach Chad McClure:
Q: At Hayesville what is the baseline/criteria to have your jersey number retired?
A: Normal Criteria is 1st of all have the statistical side and wait until a time period of at least 5 years. A coach has to make a nomination then meet with a selected committee to discuss the athlete. Along with the athletic side, the former student-athlete also has to have great character and be a good role model.
Q: Is this your first former player to get their jersey retired? If so what does that mean to you as a coach?
A: This is the 1st player I have coached to have this honor. I feel very blessed and honored to be a part of her story. She is the one that put all the work and time in. I am so happy for her.
Q: What was it like to coach Amanda Thompson/how was she different from your typical player?
A: Amanda was one of a kind. Her Basketball IQ and work ethic were incredible. She was a coach on the floor and made everyone around her better. She modeled the qualities of what you look for in a leader. She walked the walk on and off the floor. She handled adversity in high school that some never face. She watched her mom battle cancer throughout her high school career. She never missed a practice, open gym, shootaround, walkthrough, meeting, etc. To see what she accomplished, and knowing what she had to go through speaks volumes about her and her parents.
Q: What is one or two moments/games that you specifically remember about her career?
A: There are many moments I remember about Amanda but one specifically was during the SMC Tournament Championship game at Swain. We were playing Cherokee. Amanda got a Defensive Rebound, pushed the ball in transition to the top of the key and made a behind the back pass to a teammate in the corner for a 3. She didn’t normally do all the flashy things like that. She was a workhorse but that moment was one of those moments that everyone in the gym went WOAH! She had many moments where she shined on and off the court.
Q: What is it like to have Amanda Thompson back on the bench with you helping your current team some this year?
A: It is truly amazing to have her back helping. She has a way to make everyone around her better in everything she does. She represents everything I am trying to promote in our program. She is real and loves people genuinely. God is definitely at work in her life
Q: Anything else you would like to say about Amanda Thompson or her career as a Yellow Jacket?
A: Amanda is a strong, kind, Christian person with a servant’s heart. As a Coach, you try to teach your players that there is more to learn than wins and losses. I hope I was able to teach Amanda half as much as she taught me. Amanda is a winner and I thank God for allowing Amanda to be a part of my family and profession. If I had a daughter, I would want her to be like Amanda.
It was a special night and one that was beyond deserved. There are very few players like Thompson that come along in sports. Especially in a small town like Hayesville. One might say because of the small town she grew up in though that it helped her be the student, high character individual and overall great person she is.

Derick Randal Canup: Obituary
Obituaries January 18, 2020Derick Randal Canup, age 29 of Hayesville, NC passed away Friday, January 17, 2020.
He was born at Murphy Medical Center to Randy and Donna Rhodes Canup of Hayesville. Derick worked for Robert Penland Builders Poured Walls. He attended Hayesville Church of God.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nevaeh; and paternal grandfather, Paw Marvin Canup.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his sister, Whitney Canup; two nephews, Braleyn Thompson and Bently Canup; maternal grandmother, Martha Rhodes; and paternal grandmother, Louise Canup.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville. Rev. Ricky Rogers will officiate. A eulogy will be given by Drew Garrett. Pallbearers will be Jason Thompson, Josh Bailey, Terry Smith, Shane Fuller, Casey Canup, Cameron Canup and James Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Braleyn Thompson and Bently Canup.

Florica “Sam” Spence: Obituary
Obituaries January 18, 2020Florica “Sam” Spence, age 75 of Marble, NC passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Erlanger of Chattanooga.
She was born in Madrid, Spain to Frank and Ola Bell Belcher. Sam began her nursing career at Providence Hospital in Murphy, NC. She also worked at District Memorial in Andrews, NC before obtaining her RN. She worked many places before retiring from Personal Touch Assisted Living. Her life always consisted of caring for others.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two daughters, Cammy Spence and Nikki Crisp and one granddaughter, Krystal Millsaps.
Sam is survived by two daughters, Pam (Rick) DeVore and Abby Spence and one son David “CB” (Bennie Jo) McKinnon all of Marble, NC; grandchildren Shannon (Jeremy) Silvers, Sam (Barry) Cross, Shonda (Seth) McClure, Aaron (Candace) DeVore, Brittany (Dustin) Davis, Amanda Amos, Ben McKinnon, Jameson Bartholomew, Megan and Tasha Crisp; great grandchildren Dakoda Silvers, Chance and Coda Blair, Bryson Bolling, Brock and Kylie Cross, Myah and Scarlett McClure, Austin Davis; best friend, Pam Daniel and a special little friend, Payton Hyde.

Robert Stiles Jr., 76, of Andrews passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020 in an Andrews care facility. He was a native of Cherokee County and a United States Army veteran. He lived in Athens, Georgia for several years before moving back to Cherokee County. Robert worked throughout his life as an over-the-road tractor trailer driver. Robert was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed watching Rev. Charles Stanley on television.
He was the son of the late Robert Thad Sr. and Janie Carroll Stiles and the husband of the late Minnie Allen Stiles and his second wife, Delthia Melton Stiles. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Stiles; six sisters, Ola Pope, Erna Postell, Carolyn Morris, Cleo Dockery, Ruth Ballew, and Pauline Stiles; and three brothers, Frank, Dillard, and Grant Stiles.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Berry of Murphy; two sons, Robert Stiles III of Dalton, Georgia and Rick Stiles of Andrews; a sister, Margie Ashe and husband, Vernon of Locust Grove, Georgia; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
An inurnment will be in Bellview Community Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Robert Stiles Jr. to help with his funeral expenses.

Sally Stiles: Obituary
Obituaries January 18, 2020
Sally Stiles, 80, of Andrews passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020 in a Chattanooga, Tennessee hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Sally was a homemaker and was a member of the McClelland Cove Baptist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Floyd and Emma Williams Hodge. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Bertha Clark, Mary Jo Stevenson, and Ruth Welch; and three brothers, Bill, John, and Claude Hodge.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene Stiles; a daughter, Emogene Stiles of Ellijay, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2020 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with the Rev. Steve West officiating. The interment was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roger Stanley, Michael and Phillip Hodge, Shawn Clark, Tony Hall, and Brody Holloway. Bobby Grindstaff served as an honorary pallbearer.
The family received friends from 12:30-1:45 Thursday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews prior to the services.

Hayesville boys win to take first place in conference

On Friday night, January 10th the Hayesville Yellow Jackets hosted the undefeated Andrews Wildcats. Andrews while carrying a gaudy record had yet to play much competition that had tested them. They had played a very good, but up and down Cherokee team earlier in the week. Yet it is known Cherokee has never been much for defense and that’s a tough way to play against a team like Andrews. Hayesville was ready to bring great defense and play at a pace that would frustrate Andrews.

Head coach Michael Cottrell said pregame that the key to the game was contain, contain, contain. To make Andrew’s take contested jumpers and not finish easy at the rim. They have many great athletes who will happily beat people of the dribble and finish at the rim.
Early in the game it looked like Hayesvilles plan may not be a good one. Wildcat Junior Kabe Ellis scored Andrews first 11 points of the night. Ellis had four first half threes and looked like he may lead his team to a hard fought win. Even through his great scoring burst Hayesvilles steady offense helped them to a first quarter lead. That coupled with sophomore Jake McTaggart matching Ellis with 11 points of his own, Hayesville took a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter the games initial up and down pace really changed with Hayesville controlling much of the ball. Andrews was looking for quick scoring and transition buckets. Very few were available for them as Hayesville got back on defense and made nothing easy. As well they were tiring Andrews out when they possessed the ball. Hayesville was patient and at times would run offense for a full 60 seconds. Waiting for Andrews to finally get impatient and jump a lane at the wrong time resulted in Hayesville getting some easy baskets. Hayesville took a 27-23 point lead into the half.

Coming into the third quarter Hayesville still controlled the pace and contained as their coach wanted them to. Andrews hit many tough shots on the night but had very few easy scoring chances. Hayesville played tight man to man defense all night and rarely got caught out of position. It was another slow scoring quarter with Hayesville grinding it out on both sides of the ball. The quarter ended with Hayesville having a 36-31 point lead.
Coming into the fourth quarter the pace picked up a little and the scoring increased. Andrews even had a one point lead during the quarter. It appeared that they would steal a victory at Hayesville. Yet Hayesville had one last push in them that was too much for the Wildcats to handle. I would be remiss not to mention how fantastic Hayesvilles sophomore point guard Kolbe Ashe was. Not only did he control the pace the entire night he played fantastic defense on Ellis.
Free throw shooting was a struggle for both teams all night but Hayesville made some important ones at the end. McTaggart and freshman Kyle Lunsford each went two for two at the free throw lines in the waning minutes of the game. In the games closing minutes Ashes great defense on Ellis and tired Wildcat legs left them needing one or two more buckets they never found. Hayesville finished the game with great defense and just enough timely points to win 54-49.

It was a great night in Hayesville, former Yellow Jacket star Amanda Thompson had her jersey retired. The boys team did their part to complete a sweep of all the games and now sit alone in first place of the conference.

Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets cruise to easy victory

On Friday night, Jan. 10, the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Andrews Lady Wildcats. Regardless of records it was an important game with conference standings to think of. Andrews record coming into the game was nothing to write home about but are young and improving team.

In the first quarter there was actually a little bit of back and forth. The Lady Wildcats pushed the Lady Yellow Jackets more than most would have expected. The Lady Yellow Jackets were able to get some needed points in the paint. Junior Brianna Foster provided it for Hayesville with seven first quarter points. Hayesville closed the quarter with a 12-8 lead.
The second quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets really tightened the defensive clamps in the second quarter. The Lady Yellow Jackets also upped their scoring in the second quarter, with 14 points. Ten of those points came from Senior Jade Patterson with two big three pointers. Hayesville ended the half with a 26-11 lead.
Coming into the third quarter Hayesville had no plans to let up and looked to increase their lead. Once again the combination of Andrews offensive struggles and Hayesvilles great defense kept the Lady Wildcats to only four points in the quarter. Hayesville ended the third quarter with a few late buckets and 38-15 lead.
Coming into the fourth quarter with the game in hand Hayesville continued to execute offensively for another 13 points. They got scoring from five different players in the quarter. The Lady Yellow Jackets were able to cruise to a 51 to 22 victory.

The Lady Yellow Jackets had a well rounded performance with many players contributing. Sometimes it can be hard to play games like this but the Lady Yellow Jackets played hard. They were able to continue growing as a team and get ready for harder games to come.
