Lady Yellow Jackets Lose to Murphy

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow hosted the Murphy Lady Bulldogs on Friday evening in a conference matchup. The Lady Yellow Jackets played the Lady Bulldogs tough and after getting down early played with them for much of the game. Ultimately though the Lady Bulldogs were too much for Hayesville, pulling away in the fourth quarter winning 53-33.

In the first quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets got off to a rough start as Murphy couldn’t miss from three early. Lady Bulldogs guard Kaiya Pockens got off to a hot start scoring 11 first quarter points including three three pointers. After the rough start Hayesville battled back but still trailed at the end of the first quarter 20-8.

In the second quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets were playing well in many facets of the game. They did much better than in the first game against Murphy at breaking the press. Yet even when breaking the press they struggled to score in the half court. A problem that has plagued Hayesville all year, simply put they struggle to the ball in the hoop. They finished the quarter trailing 33-16.

The Lady Jackets came out in the third quarter battling hard and playing very evenly with Murphy. They held the Lady Bulldogs to only 11 third quarter points giving themselves a chance to get back in the game. Yet the Lady Jackets could only muster 10 points themselves in the quarter. On nights when this Hayesville team finds ways to score they can play with anyone. Yet tonight was not one of those nights and they ended the third quarter trailing 44-26.

Once again Hayesville held tight defensively against Murphy in the fourth quarter. In each successive quarter tonight Hayesville held Murphy to less points. Yet with the game already out of hand it was too much for a Lady Yellow Jacket comeback tonight. The Lady Yellow Jackets still trying to fix their offensive woes fell to Murphy 53-33.

Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets Win Tough Conference Game

Business
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Swain Lady Devils on Tuesday night. The game was an important one for the Lady Yellow Jackets. Coming off a three game losing streak this was an opportunity for Hayesville to get back on track. While it was by no means an easy game they did get back on the right side of the win column. They defeated the Lady Devils 39-32 to pick up their second conference win.

Hayesville

Lila Payne hits a big 3 pointer.

In the first quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets got off to a good start, playing as hard as we have seen all season. Hayesville got scoring from five girls in the quarter and got out to an early lead. This is while they played great defense which was a theme throughout the game for the Lady Jackets. They finished the quarter with a 15 to 7 lead.

In the second quarter the Hayesville offense came to a screeching halt. While only scoring six points in the quarter, it seemed that may leave the door open for Swain to fight back. This was to no avail though as the Lady Jackets defense continued to impress holding Swain to a measly five points in the quarter. This actually allowed Hayesville to extend their lead even further, going into halftime with a 21-12 lead.

Hayesville

The Lady Yellow Jacket offense was still asleep at the wheel in the third quarter unfortunately. Only scoring three points in the quarter allowed Swain to get right back in it. While Hayesvilles defense was still solid, their low scoring output really hurt them. At the quarters end Swain had come all the way back to take the lead. It appeared that Hayesville was about to let another winnable game slip away. Swain led going into the fourth quarter 26-24.

Coming into the fourth quarter, Hayesville knew they were going to have to find more ways to score to have a chance. They got back to much of what they did in the first quarter. They spread the ball around and got multiple players involved. Four different players scored in the quarter totaling 15 fourth quarter points. This matched their first quarter output and this is all while holding Swain to only six fourth quarter points. This allowed Hayesville to fight off the Lady Devils and win 39-32.

Lady Yellow Jackets Lose in a Nail Biter

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets traveled to Hiwassee Dam on Friday night to take on the Lady Eagles. This was a non conference matchup but a good opportunity for Hayesville to continue their momentum from a win earlier in the week. After a good start to the game it looked like the Lady Jackets may be able to do just that. Yet offensive woes hit hard in the second half and they lost in a nail biter 40-38.

Hayesville

Lila Payne hits a big 3 pointer.

The first quarter went back and forth with both teams making good on a few early opportunities. Hayesville came out in their 2-2-1 press early in the game, forcing turnovers early and often. Yet even with the stolen possessions, the Lady Jackets struggled to finish around the basket after their early success. Hayesville got their offense going though late in the quarter though making several long jumpers, building a first quarter lead of 15-5.

It was evident that the Lady Eagles offense was going to flow through their post scoring. Hayesvilles defense was stifling the guards but struggling to stop it when Hiwassee Dam got the ball in the post. As well the free throw opportunities were plentiful behind some happy whistles. This was partially responsible for the Lady Eagles cutting into the lead. Hayesville, hot from three, were able to maintain a lead going into halftime 23-17.

The third quarter has been a struggle offensively for the Lady Jackets this season and this night was no different. While getting some open looks, it felt like there was a lid on the basket. Yet because of their always stellar defense the Lady Jackets were able to keep their lead going into the fourth quarter. Also due to two late three pointers extending the lead to 32-26 even after some frustrating misses.

hayesville

Going into the fourth quarter it felt like the game could be slipping away from the Lady Jackets. Hiwassee Dam got a few early points to make it a one possession game. Hayesville did not just go away though, they answered with some key baskets of their own. It was a very entertaining fourth quarter from both teams, going back and forth with each possession feeling more important than the last.

Due to a few untimely turnovers though the Lady Eagles were able to fight all the way back and take a late fourth quarter lead, their first of the game. With the deficit at four Hayesville got a big three from junior Lila Payne to cut it to one. Hayesville had two straight possessions with a chance to take the lead but couldn’t get good shots to fall. Hiwassee Dam had a chance to push their lead beyond reach but missed several free throw opportunities. The Lady Jackets though could not get a single shot to fall in the closing moments losing 40-38.

Lady Jackets Fall to Conference Foe Cherokee

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Cherokee Lady Braves in a conference matchup Tuesday night. The Lady Yellow Jackets fought hard in this matchup and at times looked ready to pull off an upset. The Lady Braves, a very talented team, shot it very well from the three for the night. Ultimately though, Hayesville fell to Cherokee 57-38, falling to 1-2 in conference.

Hayesville

Lila Payne fights past her defender.

In the first quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets were getting some good looks but had a hard time getting much to fall. They also were able to get to the free throw line but struggled to convert. Cherokee on the other hand got off to a great start scoring 16 in the quarter. This led to the Braves ending the first quarter with a 16-8 lead.

The second quarter was much of the same with the Braves executing well on offense. The Lady Yellow Jackets never could find their offensive flow in the game. It will be a test for this Hayesville team to hit their ceiling without executing better offensively. Defensively the team is making progress, capable of shutting teams down for a stretch. With that said Cherokee extended their lead to 31-19 at the half.

Hayesville

Lila Roberts brings the ball up the court.

In the third quarter Hayesville fought hard and played pretty evenly with Cherokee. Everytime Hayesville would start to shrink the lead, Cherokee would answer back with a bucket of their own. It felt like for a stretch Hayesville may push themselves back into the game but fell just short. The third quarter ended with the Lady Braves leading 46-31.

In the fourth quarter Cherokees lead was too much for the Yellow Jackets to overcome. Cherokee extended their lead early and put the game out of reach. This Lady Yellow Jacket team is more than capable of playing with or even beating this Cherokee team. To do that though the Lady Yellow Jackets will need to execute better offensively. The Lady Yellow Jackets fell 57-38, with the game being closer than the final score may indicate.

Lady Yellow Jackets Win Big

Business, Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets played host to the Andrews Lady Wildcats on Friday night. This was an important conference matchup, as the Lady Jackets were trying to get back to .500 in conference. Hayesville was the superior team in this game and dominated through all four quarters. The Lady Yellow Jackets secured the win on the night 61-13.

Hayesville started the game out on an 18-0 run to give themselves an early cushion. The early lead allowed the Lady Jackets to play comfortably and share the ball getting everyone involved. It was a good night for head coach Chad McClure to try some things both defensively and offensively. As we saw Hayesville run full and half court traps on defense. At the half the Lady Yellow Jackets led 43-9.

The second half was much of the same with Hayesville dictating the game on their terms. Hayesville extended their lead to over 40 points with 5:30 left in their third quarter. This resulted in a running clock as by the rulebook. At this point the game was all Hayesville and the final result came quickly.

The Lady Jackets did have some strong individual performances regardless of the score. Sometimes games like these can be great for a players confidence and result in continued high level play in future contests. Hayesville finished the game as strong as they started, winning 61-13. While they may have been the better team, they also played hard and shared the ball on well this night.

The Lady Jackets will look to continue on their momentum built in their first conference win next week. They will have another conference home game on Tuesday, January 19th as the Cherokee Lady Braves come to town. Hayesville Girls Fall to Rival Bulldogs

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets played at Murphy on Monday night. They took on the defending co-state champion Lady Bulldogs. Murphy came into the game as heavy favorites after only losing one player off the state championship team. To make things even tougher it appeared Hayesville only dressed 9 out of the 15 players listed on their roster. Murphy got out to a big first quarter lead and never looked back winning 53-28.

Hayesville

Lila Paynes fights through traffic.

It appeared in the opening moments of the game that Hayesville may be ready to give the Lady Bulldogs some trouble. Lila Payne opened up the game with back to back threes giving Hayesville their only lead of the night. Murphy quickly fought back using a stifling press defense that gave Hayesville fits. The times Hayesville broke the press their offense actually did well. Yet those opportunities were not coming often. Murphy hounded Hayesvilles guards for the entirety of the first half to go along with some great shooting.

It is easy to see why this Murphy team is a favorite to repeat for a state championship this year. They are loaded with talent and play as aggressively as any girls team you will see. Behind six first half threes Murphy took a 38-13 lead into halftime.

Hayesville

Lila Roberts lines up a three point shot.

After the half Hayesville did a much better job of handling the pressure and looked to give Murphy a hard time. It appears when a team gets the Lady Bulldogs into a half court game that may be one of their only weaknesses. Head coach Chad McClure’s pregame keys were handling pressure, don’t give open looks and rebound. Hayesville rebounded pretty well all night even when at a size disadvantage. They handled pressure better in the second half along with playing better defense. Hayesville actually tied the Lady Bulldogs when it came to second half scoring 15-15.

One could wonder if Hayesville had their full complement of players if they could have given Murphy a better game. It will make for an intriguing match up the second time they play at Hayesville if both teams can be at full health. Regardless the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Yellow Jackets 53-28.

The Lady Yellow Jackets Run Away With It In Their Home Opener

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Nantahala Lady Hawks in the first game of their long awaited basketball season. Hayesville is bringing back some firepower down low this year with three seniors leading their post rotation. At the same time though they are incorporating some new guards into the playing rotation. In this game Hayesville totally had their opponent overmatched. While the game itself was not close, it gave head coach Chad McClure a look at some of his new pieces in a low pressure environment.

Hayesville

Jocelyn Buckner rises high to score over her opponent.

In the first half the Lady Jackets were able run through many of their offensive sets. This gave the opportunity for many different players to get great looks at the hoop. Hayesville was led by senior Brianna Foster with nine first half points. Foster showed off some new moves including leading the break multiple times along with a couple of fancy euro step finishes. At the halftime break, the Lady Yellow Jackets led 38-2.

The second half saw Hayesville get many of their reserves valuable time, with several seeing their first ever varsity action. Hayesville had fewer scorer opportunities as the majority of the second half was played with a running clock. The Lady Yellow Jackets did not do anything in an attempt to run up the score. Yet even Hayesvilles second unit grossly outplayed the Lady Hawks.

Hayesville

Breanna Cothren looks to pass to an open teammate.

The game ended in a more lopsided score than anyone would have even guessed. With Hayesville running away with it 64-4. The Lady Yellow Jackets played good team ball, sharing it well and executing their offense with great efficiency. This game was a nice opportunity for Hayesville to get back on the court after an extended offseason.

In their next contest the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets (1-0) will travel to Graham County to take on the Robbinsville Lady Knights (1-0). This will be their first conference matchup of the year. While early in the year this game presents an important start in conference play, in which will arguably be the toughest conference in the state.

Lady Yellow Jackets Host Lady Panthers in Preseason Scrimmage

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Franklin Lady Panthers in their one and only preseason scrimmage of the year. Being that it was a scrimmage the format was a little different than what fans may be used to seeing. They played four full quarters but the score was not kept on the scoreboard. While a box score was kept there were no foul limits for players. As well they used a modified free throw method for the bonus. All stats shared in this article are considered unofficial and do not count towards season long totals.

hayesville

Brianna Foster makes a free throw.

The Lady Yellow Jackets having lost several seniors and a few players to transfer welcomed some new faces to the court. It was an odd feeling being in an empty gym as no fans are allowed at NC scrimmages. The only ones in attendance were players, coaches, essential personnel and a few media members. As well it was a strange feeling seeing all the players in masks while playing. One has to wonder about the safety of players being able to breathe safely in a high cardio sport like basketball.

Now onto the scrimmage itself, the first quarter was a back and forth affair. The Lady Jackets held a slim two point lead going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, it was a defensive battle with both teams struggling to see many shots fall. At the half the Lady Jackets had a six point lead.they went into half looking to solve their offensive woes with some adjustments.

In the third quarter both teams executed better on offense and were able to each have their highest scoring quarters yet. Lady Jacket new comer Madison Ellison chipped in 5 third quarter points with some crafty moves. As well it was great to see Hayesville senior Kynnly McClure back out on the court. McClure missed the end of last season due to injury and she made her presence felt. She did not score a lot in this game but her energy, defense and rebounding presence was felt.

hayesville

Kynnly McClure hits a three.

Going into the fourth quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets looked to hold onto their ten point lead and give themselves some confidence going into their season opener next week. While Franklin had their highest scoring quarter yet but the Lady Jackets lead was too much to overcome. The Lady Jackets unofficially won the scrimmage by seven points. They will look to build upon their performance in their home opener next week.

Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets season ends in second round

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets traveled to take on the higher seeded Alleghany Lady Trojans. It was a close tight battle with the Lady Yellow Jackets trailing throughout but never by a wide margin. The game ended with Hayesvilles season ending in a tough 58-42 loss.

Things got off to a slow start for both teams, neither quite finding their offensive rhythm. The Lady Yellow Jackets had some good looks but the shots just weren’t falling. They found themselves trailing 9-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Hayesville

Senior Annie Brooks makes a free throw.

In the second quarter it was much of the same offensively for the Lady Yellow Jackets. While Alleghany started to knock down some shots and increase their lead. The game went to halftime with Alleghany holding a 23-15 lead over the Lady Yellow Jackets.

In the second half Hayesville started to find a little more of an offensive flow, scoring 11 in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth quarter. At this point though Alleghany had control and didn’t stop scoring themselves. Lila Payne broke out of a little slump in the second round game going three of four from three and had 10 points overall.

Hayesville battled hard to the end but just didn’t quite have that one last push in them on this night. The game ended with the Lady Yellow Jackets losing 58-42 with it being much closer than the score indicated.

One thing that could have changed the game was the foul count was Hayesville 27 and Alleghany only 11. It is something you expect a little on the road in the playoffs but was a little much. The free throw disparity gave Alleghany a huge advantage. Hayesville had four of five starters foul out with the fifth starter having four fouls. It would have been a much more interesting matchup had the Lady Yellow Jackets played this game on a neutral court.

Hayesville Lady Yellow Jacket playoff round two preview

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The 15th seeded Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets travel to take on the 2nd seeded Alleghany Lady Trojans tonight. This is a 2nd round matchup in the NCHSAA playoffs, with 32 teams left playing in the entire 1A classification. Hayesville is coming off a big first round win that was an absolute battle for four quarters. Expect much of the same tonight, at this point in the year every team left is solid.

Hayesville

Playoff Bracket

The Lady Yellow Jackets have had games this year where they have competed with some of the best teams in the state. No doubt playing in what many believe to be the best 1A girls conference in the state prepares them for games like this. First the Lady Yellow Jackets have to endure a five plus hour bus ride. If they can not let that affect them too much they will have a great chance at an upset.

In talks with head coach Chad McClure he felt good about his team’s chances to pull the upset. Here is his exclusive round 2 preview interview.

  1. Big win over Polk Co. any thoughts on your teams first round win?

We didn’t play our best game but played well enough to win.  This team has been scrappy all year and we had some kids step up.  Polk did a good job shutting down our inside game. Lizzy and Annie really gave us a boost when we needed it.

  1. What do you know about Alleghany, your second round opponent?

They are solid, won 25 games, and seem to be pretty balanced as 4 players average double figures.

  1. How to quick turnarounds only 1 day between games change your ability to get ready for games?

It is tough because you try to get info quickly to prepare your team as much as possible but in this time of the year you just fine tune your system and stay polished on skills

  1. What does your team need to do to win and advance on Thursday?

First we have to handle the long road trip.  We will have to handle the environment. Every team left is good. We just have to be better for 32 minutes.

The Alleghany Lady Trojans are a very experienced team with five of their top six scorers being seniors. In talks with their coach this is a year that her team has been building for with six seniors and three juniors on the team. They have three players shooting over 50% from the three point line. The Lady Yellow Jackets will need to slow down their shooting and pull down rebounds to keep them from getting second chance points.

The Lady Yellow Jackets got a season best performance out of Lizzy Brusini on Tuesday night. Brusini has not been a top scorer for the Lady Yellow Jackets throughout the year. Yet her season best performance led the way for the win on Tuesday. Who might step up tonight for Hayesville? That is yet to be determined but if the Lady Yellow Jackets can get players to continually step up in big games don’t be surprised if they make a playoff run.

Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets survive and advance

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Polk Co. Lady Wolverines in the first round of the NCHSAA state playoffs Tuesday night. Hayesville the 15 seed having home court advantage over Polk Co. the 18 seed. This game had all the makings of a great playoff matchup. The game did not disappoint with it being a four quarter battle that Hayesville pulled out 45 to 43 to move on to the second round.

Hayesville

Junior Lizzy Brusini makes a three pointer.

In the first quarter Polk Co. got off to a good start and garnered an early lead. The Lady Yellow Jackets battled back though and were able to grind out a three point lead to end the quarter.

In the second quarter it was a low scoring affair with both teams playing great defense. It wasn’t that either team was missing good shots, it was that neither team was allowing good looks. The defense was stifling with each team’s few points coming on either fast breaks or offensive rebounds. Regardless the Lady Yellow Jackets were able to keep their lead despite Polk Co. outscoring them by one point in the quarter. This gave them a lead 18-16 going into the Halftime break.

In the third quarter Hayesville started to press the Lady Wolverines and got some great results. The Lady Yellow Jackets were able to force turnovers and get some easy baskets. It was a battle though and a very physical game. The third quarter ended with Hayesville leading 28-23.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets press led to their best offensive quarter. They were able to increase their lead all the way up to nine points. Yet in the waning minutes of the game Polk Co. fought back and got it within a one possession game. Even through some mistakes Hayesville went five for six down the stretch from the free throw line. It looked like the game was about to slip away but because of made free throws for Hayesville and missed free throws for Polk Co. Hayesville was able to survive and advance.

Hayesville

Senior Annie Brooks makes a late game free throw.

Hayesville leaders for the night:

Lizzy Brusini 17 points

Annie Brooks 12 points 6-6 FT

Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets round one playoff preview

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets will be hosting the Polk Co. Lady Wolverines in the first round of the NCHSAA state playoffs. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. at the Hayesville High School gymnasium. It is a season-long goal for every team to host a first-round playoff game. There are 112 teams playing girls basketball in the NCHSAA, only 64 make the playoffs and only 32 get to host a first round game. This will be a matchup of two 15-win teams each from strong conferences.

The Hayesville girls are up and down, at times capable of playing with the best teams in the state as shown in their wins against Cherokee and Robbinsville. Then at other times, we have seen them falter against some lesser teams when shots aren’t falling. While Polk Co. started the year 12-1, they have faltered down the stretch against some tough competition going 3-7 to end the year. This has all the makings of a great game and one of the more exciting matchups in all of the first round matchups.

Hayesville

Playoff Bracket

Polk Co. is very young with not a single senior on the team. As a team, they average 52.7 points per game. They are led in scoring by a sophomore Olivia Overholt with 15.9 points per game, followed by a junior Marissa Twitty who averages 9.3. They only average 1.9 3-pointers made per game, so they look to get it inside often.

It will be interesting to see how such a long road trip will affect the Lady Wolverines. Long road trips can have adverse effects on young teams. Can they make their trip and come out with good focus early in the game? It is a 135-mile one way trip, probably taking about three hours by bus. The Lady Jackets need to get after it early to give them a better chance at a win.

Here are Polk Co. Wolverines head coach Brandy Alm’s thoughts on the first round playoff game.

1.What do you know about your opponent Hayesville and expect from them.

I know very little about Hayesville, I know they play in a tremendous conference and are very aggressive.

2. How would you describe your team, things they do well, are you fast paced or slow paced, etc?

We definitely play hard and try to create offense through our defensive intensity.

3. Who are your star/key players?

Our leading scorer is sophomore, Olivia Overholt.

Here are Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets head coach Chad McClure’s thoughts on the first round game.

  1. What are your expectations/goals in the playoffs?

Playoffs are an exciting time especially when you get to host games.  Anything can happen on any given night so you just prepare the best you can and try to win and advance.  This young team has competed all year and I expect that to continue. Right now the goal is to take it one game at a time and advance as far as possible.

  1. What do you know about your opponent and what type of game can fans expect?

Polk County plays in a very good 1A/2A league and finished third. They have several good players and are very similar to us, so fans can expect an exciting game.  They have won 15 games like us so it should be fun and a great atmosphere. I encourage all fans to be here and support these teams.

  1. If there is one key as a team to your playoff success what would it be?

We have to continue to play quality defense and rebound.  If we shoot it well and execute on offense, we will be a tough out for anyone.

This game has all the makings of a hotly contested playoff matchup. The key for Hayesville can they execute on offense and get good looks? Secondly, can they knock down shots when they get good looks? When the Lady Yellow Jackets have shot well in games, they have been very tough to beat. Lastly, can they get off to a good start.

Lady Yellow Jackets lose in battle for third to Robbinsville

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Wednesday night the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets traveled back to Rosman to take on the Robbinsville Lady Black Knights. This game was for third place in the conference as the two teams were in a tie and it needed to be broken for playoff seeding. The Lady Yellow Jackets played much better then they had the previous night but the wear of traveling to Rosman two nights in a row started to show late in the game. The Lady Yellow Jackets hung tight but could never get over the hump and lost in close one 55-46.

In the first half both teams played well really pretty evenly in most categories except for one. Robbinsville shot the ball better than the Lady Jackets, this resulted in Hayesville being down 26-16 at the half. As it has been all year for Hayesville when they shoot the ball well they can play with and beat anyone on their schedule. Yet when the shots aren’t falling they don’t quite have capability to beat the top teams in the conference.

In the second half Hayesville pushed hard to try and make a comeback and clinch sole third place from Robbinsville. Senior Jade Patterson did her best to help that effort as the only Lady Yellow Jacket with more than one three on the night going 5-7. It was a back and forth quarter with Hayesville cutting it to single digits several times. Yet the quarter ended with the Lady Jackets trailing 40-28.

Junior Lizzy Brusini drives to the rim.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets outscored the Lady Knights but their lead was too much at this point. The game ended with Hayesville losing 55-46 in a battle. One wonders what could have the result been had Hayesville not had to play two games in two nights with a 3 hour road trip both ways.

Lady Yellow Jackets fall in conference tournament semifinal

Hayesville Basketball, Sports, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Tuesday night the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets traveled to Rosman to take on Cherokee in the conference tournament semifinal. Hayesville was coming off an upset of Cherokee the previous week. Cherokee came out firing on all cylinders to ensure Hayesville would not beat them again. That combined with turnover and rebound  issues led to Cherokee winning in commanding fashion 76-39.

The first quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets couldn’t get any shots to fall and did their best to limit Cherokee. Yet the quarter ended with Cherokee holding a 16 to 7 point lead. The second quarter is where the game got out of hand with Cherokee scoring 31 second quarter points. The Lady Yellow Jackets struggled with turnovers and rebounding in the second quarter which led to multiple fastbreak opportunities for the Lady Braves. The game went to half time with Cherokee holding a 47 to 12 lead.

In the second half give the Lady Jackets credit they fought hard even with the game out of hand. With starters still in for both teams Hayesville finally found some offense and outscored Cherokee in the third quarter. While outscoring them 17-16 in the quarter entering the fourth it was still a 63-29 lead for Cherokee.

The fourth quarter went by fast with Hayesville and Cherokee getting many role players time on the floor. Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with game ending Cherokee 76 Hayesville 39. It was the type of night where Cherokee brought their A game while Hayesville did not play up to their capability.

Lady Yellow Jackets battle back but fall short

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Monday night January 27th, the Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets hosted the Franklin Lady Panthers. The Lady Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start, something that has plagued them at times this year. The Yellow Jackets fought back and made a game of it, even tying it up at one point. In the end the Lady Yellow Jackets fell to a very good Franklin Lady Panther team 46-38.

In the first quarter the Lady Panthers blitzed Hayesville storming out a 9-0 lead. Head coach Chad McClure called a timeout and settled his team, who then actually outscored the panthers in the game after the initial early run by Franklin. The first quarter ended with the Lady Yellow Jackets trailing 15-12.

In the second quarter the Lady Yellow Jackets had some good offensive opportunities but just couldn’t get much to fall. The Lady Yellow Jackets only managed 7 points in the quarter while the Lady Panthers had 15. It appeared that Franklin may run away with this one as they did when they hosted the Lady Yellow Jackets earlier in the year.

Hayesville entered the third quarter trailing 30-19 knowing they had to do something to fight back. They tightened the defensive screws and put the clamps on Franklin in the second half. They held the Lady Panthers to only 16 second half points and outscored them in both quarters. Yet the deficit from the first half was just too much to overcome.

Hayesville fell to Franklin 46-38, while holding the Panthers to well under their season scoring average. The Lady Jackets offense has been inconsistent at times this year, but the execution has been solid. Good looks are just not falling as much as one would hope for. If the shots start falling this Hayesville team could be very dangerous come playoff time. Only time will tell if that will happen though.

Hayesville leaders for the night:

Jade Patterson 10 points

Breanna Foster 10 points

Lila Payne 8 points

Hayesville will next play on the road, at Rosman on Tuesday night January the 28th. The first time these two teams met Hayesville cruised to an easy 55-32 victory. Yet with the long ride to Rosman and playing on back to back nights we could be in for a good game.

Lady Yellow Jackets fall to rival Murphy

Hayesville Basketball, TeamFYNSports
Hayesville

On Tuesday night January 21st, Hayesville hosted rival the Murphy Lady Bulldogs. This game last year Hayesville pulled off a big upset and were looking to do the same. Yet the Lady Bulldogs pressed for 4 quarters and made it very difficult on Hayesville. With too many turnovers and some missed offensive opportunities the Lady Yellow Jackets lost 54-34 falling 10-6 on the year and 4-3 in conference.

Hayesville

sophomore Lila Payne makes a three.

In the first quarter the Lady Jackets had some good chances that just rimmed out while the Lady Bulldogs capitalized on some transition opportunities. The quarter ended with Murphy leading 14-7 with Hayesville looking to make some adjustments.

In the second quarter Hayesville really frustrated Murphy by slowing the pace and making the Lady Bulldogs take contested shots. Murphy was trying to force it in but couldn’t get anything going early in the quarter. Hayesville actually held Murphy scoreless for the first six minutes of the quarter. It looked like Hayesville amy be able to cut the deficit to just a few points going into the half. Murphy answered in a big way with a 9-0 run in the last two minutes to extend their lead going into halftime 22-14.

Coming into the third quarter it was back and forth with Hayesville once again cutting the lead to under five points. Yet everytime Hayesville made a run Murphy would answer with a bigger run of their own. Hayesville got a great effort out of sophomore Lila Payne who hit big three after big three all night. She hit several with just inches to get it off, she had 22 points on the night to lead the way for the Lady Yellow Jackets. Yet the third quarter ended with Murphy on a run leading 40-25.

In the fourth quarter Hayesville kept playing hard until the final horn, but just didn’t have enough offense on this night to keep up. The game plan was great by head coach Chad McClure to slow the pace and frustrate Murphys offense. Yet the Lady Jackets just didn’t get enough done on the offensive side of the ball to pull of the upset on this night. The game finished with a lopsided score of 54-34 in favor of Murphy.

Hayesville leaders for the night:
Lila Payne 22 points
Lizzy Brusini 5 points

The game was much closer than the score indicated due to some late scoring with reserves in the game. This is the last scheduled game between these two teams this year, but could we see another matchup possibly in the conference tournament or even the playoffs, only time will tell.

Hayesville will next play on the road, at Robbinsville to take on the Lady Black Knights Friday January 24th. The last time these two teams played it was an overtime thriller with Hayesville pulling out the victory.
