Three charged with trafficking methamphetamine

HAYESVILLE, N.C. –  On October 6, 2021, Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a disturbance at Peace of Mind Campground.

Once on the scene, they attempted to arrest Stephen Shiebler, who resisted and fled on foot.

Due to evidence found at the scene, a search warrant was executed at the residence. Deputies uncovered 1.2 pounds of methamphetamine, 9 grams of fentanyl, four firearms, and $4,000 in cash.

Jeffrey Allen Medley and Misty Ann Ledford were both arrested at the scene and charged with possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, traffick in methamphetamine and maintain a place for controlled substance. They were given a bond of $260,000 and a court date of October 11, 2021.

Stephen Andrew Shiebler has warrants for his arrest for maintain a vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substance, traffick in methamphetamine, possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance, possess methamphetamine, and four counts of possession of firearm by felon.

The last known area of Shiebler was along 175 near the Georgia line. He’s approximately 6 feet tall and 170 pounds.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Search warrant results in drug trafficking charges

HAYESVILLE, N.C. –  A search warrant in Warne, North Carolina revealed multiple suspected controlled substances and yielded two arrests.

On September 23, 2021, Clay County Sheriff’s Office Investigators received information regarding drug activity.

Anthony Coffey, 33, of Warne and Sheena Parton, 35, of Warne were taken into custody and each given a $100,000 secured bond. Both subjects were charged with the following;

  • Trafficking in Heroin
  • PWIMSD SCH I
  • Possession of Heroin
  • PWIMSD SCH II
  • Possession of Methamphetamine
  • Maintaining Dwelling for Keeping Controlled Substance

Both subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Clay County Sheriff’s Office asking for help locating two suspects

HAYESVILLE, NC – Clay County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help identifying two individuals wanted for questioning in a string of vehicle break-ins.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021, two suspects were captured on a surveillance camera nearby one of the vehicles. The vandalism to others’ property occurred along Fires Creek Road and Julia Buckner Road between 3 and 4 a.m. If anybody saw any suspicious persons or vehicles in that area during that time, please contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 389-6354.

The sheriff’s office doesn’t believe this is the first time these individuals performed this type of vandalism from their behavior in the footage. It’s likely they know each other well and hang out in their free time.

Clay County Sheriff’s Office asks for everyone to “look closely at the body stature and mannerisms” of the suspects.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspects “appear to be white or light skin males in their late teens or early twenties. One is fat, the other one thin.”

On-the-run Clay County inmate apprehended two days later

HAYESVILLE, NC – Clay County Sheriff’s Office stated around 4 p.m. on April 29, that Roy Lockaby was again in custody. More details are expected to follow.
Around 4:30 p.m. on April 27, inmate, Roy Edward Lockaby Jr., 25, of Cherokee County, allegedly stole a car from a Hayesville Post Office with the owner inside. The owner reported his keys, firearm, and identification were inside the car as well.
Lockaby sped away from the scene at a high rate of speed traveling west toward Cherokee County. He was in Clay County for probation violations.

On and off-duty deputies responded to try and apprehend Lockaby. North Carolina State Patrol and surrounding county law enforcement were informed of the situation and to be on the lookout for the suspect and vehicle. The car was located in the Martin’s Creek area in Cherokee County.

On April 27, 2021, at approximately 4:30 p.m., an inmate of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center assigned to the work crew stole a vehicle from the Hayesville Post Office while the vehicle’s owner was inside. The owner of the vehicle reported that the vehicle’s keys, his personal firearm, cash, and identification were inside the vehicle at the time of the theft.
The inmate, identified as Roy Edward Lockaby Jr., 25, of Cherokee County, left the scene at a high rate of speed traveling west toward Cherokee County. Lockaby was being housed in the Clay County Detention Center for probation violations out of Cherokee County.
All on and off-duty deputies responded to locate the suspect. Surrounding counties and North Carolina Highway Patrol were officially notified to be on the lookout for Lockaby and the stolen vehicle. Early in the investigation, confirmation was made that Lockaby had fled into Cherokee County and within an hour, the vehicle was located in the Martins Creek area of Cherokee County.
Clay County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to work with Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office to locate Lockaby at this time.

Motorcycle chase ends in drug arrest

On the afternoon of February 28, 2021, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an active vehicle pursuit involving a motorcycle coming into Clay County from Cherokee County. Clay County deputies located the suspect on the motorcycle on Old Hwy 64 West in Brasstown and assumed the pursuit from Cherokee County deputies. Clay County deputies pursued the motorcycle down Old Hwy 64 West until they reached US 64 then continued west. Deputies never lost sight of the motorcycle and were able to overtake it as it had mechanical problems in the Shooting Creek community. The driver of the motorcycle turned down a gravel driveway and then ran on foot in another attempt to elude deputies. Deputies we able to apprehend the suspect in a wooded area and took him into custody. He was transported to the Clay County Detention Center for processing and was served with numerous arrest warrants.
Keenen Stanley Grahl, 28 years old of Andrews was charged with: Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Heroin, Driving While License Revoked, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Resist, delay, Obstruct a Law Enforcement Office as well as numerous traffic violations and outstanding warrants for arrest from Cherokee County. He was given a $257,500 secured bond and is awaiting court. Other criminal charges are pending.

Suspect arrested after multi-county car chase

On January 7, 2021, Clay County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted a vehicle stop on a subject with known warrants for arrest. Deputies identified the subject driving a Toyota Forerunner in the Downings Creek Road area as Benjamin Dann Owens, who had active arrest warrants from Swain, Clay, and Buncombe Counties as well as Georgia. When Sheriff’s Deputies initiated the vehicle stop, Owens accelerated at a high rate of speed traveling east on Highway 64.
As deputies continued to pursue the vehicle east, a Macon County Deputy was in position at the county line to deploy spike strips. The suspect avoided the spike strips and continued into Macon County. As the suspect was approaching the area of Winding Stairs Gap rest area, he lost control of the vehicle and went off the embankment of the west bound lane. When his vehicle came to a stop he fled on foot into the woods. Clay County and Macon County Deputies, as well as NC State Highway Patrol were able to set up a perimeter and keep him contained. Deputies narrowed down his location were able to take him into custody without further incident. Owens was transported to Mission Hospital and was later released to the custody of Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Owens is currently being held at the Haywood County Detention Center under a 5 million dollar secured bond and given a court date of January 25, 2021.

The Fall of 2020 will see a new community service for the youth in Clay County established by the Sheriff’s Office.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office “Cops for Kids” will take a first-hand approach at providing activities, services and programs for the children of Clay County. We realize during this time of Covid-19 so many things have changed which unfortunately affects us all and we want our kids to know that they are still a priority to us.

We unfortunately lost our Summer Camp this year due to Covid restrictions but we are very optimistic that we can still have camp in 2021 which will be bigger and better than last year. More details on the Sheriff’s Office “Cops for kids” program will be coming soon but we wanted to let the kids know that we have not forgotten them.

Since Trick or Treating on the square has been canceled, to kick off our first event, The Clay County Sheriff’s Office, “Cops for Kids”, will be hosting drive through trick or treating at the Clay County Courthouse parking lot for Halloween 2020! Kids and parents are invited to come join the fun from the safety and convenience of the family vehicle, rain or shine while driving through the maze of tasty offerings. No parking hassles, no standing in long lines, weather will not be a factor to enjoying the fun.

Businesses, churches, public offices and the community are all invited and encouraged to participate in handing out candy. This event is designed to promote family oriented fun and an enjoyable experience for the kids while providing a safe environment for all. Spots will be assigned on a first come first serve basis in order of a diagrammed flow chart of the designated route.

A brief registration form for those wanting a spot to hand out candy is available at the front window of the Sheriff’s Office and must be filled out in order to participate. This will be a “Trunk or Treat” format and participants are encouraged to decorate their vehicles. This is for the children so keep that in mind when you decorate your vehicles and let’s remember to make them the focal point.

Handouts will be limited to commercially packaged products, no homemade treats. Everyone in the area is encouraged to join in this community event.

The Halloween drive-thru will begin at 7:00 pm in the front parking lot of the Clay County Courthouse on Courthouse Drive and end whenever we run out of candy or the last car comes thru.

Whether there are 50 participants or none the Sheriff’s Office will be there handing out Halloween candy for the kids.
