James J. Janson, 86, of Hayesville, formerly of Murphy, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 in a Clay County care facility. He was a native of Newburgh, New York. James was a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Navy, where he worked as a radio technician. He worked as a draftsman for General Dynamics most of his life. James owned “The Train Stop” bar in Franklin, Massachusetts for 15 years before retiring to Murphy. He later moved to Arkansas, where he had a horse farm. He had a love for horses. He returned to Hayesville in 2017. James attended the Boiling Springs Baptist Church locally. He enjoyed racing sports cars when he was younger.
He was the son of the late James Joseph and Elizabeth O’Shaunessey Janson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clare Lanartze Janson and his second wife, Olive Janson; a son, James J. Janson Jr.; a sister, Marie Marshall; and a brother, Robert Janson.
Surviving are his wife, Mary O’Dell Janson of Texas; a son, Curtis Janson and wife, Susan of Milford, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Jamie Janson, Christine Janson, Shaun Janson, and Jacqueline Presley; and two great-grandchildren.
An inurnment will be held in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton, Massachusetts at a later date.

Steve Cottrell: Obituary

Steve Cottrell, 76, of Hayesville passed away Monday, September 23, 2019 in a Gainesville, Georgia hospital. He was a native of Henderson, North Carolina and went on to receive his master’s degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Steve coached college basketball at Old Dominion, Washington State University, and Southern Methodist University, ending his college coaching career at Western Carolina University. He then moved to Hayesville, where he worked as coach, athletic director, and assistant principal for Hayesville High School.
He was the son of the late Joel Stephen Cottrell Sr. and Oretha Louise Avery Cottrell.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Kathy Cottrell; a daughter, Laura Cottrell of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two sons, Todd Cottrell and wife, Kim of Flowery Branch, Georgia and Michael Cottrell and wife, Jenny of Hayesville; and five grandchildren, Rachel Cottrell, Zach Cottrell, Drew Cottrell, Josh Cottrell, and Adam Cottrell.
A private family celebration will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Steve Cottrell to the Hayesville High School “Do It Right Scholarship Fund”, 205 Yellow Jacket Drive, Hayesville, NC 28904.

Wayne A. Timpson: Obituary

Wayne A. Timpson, age 73, of Marietta, Georgia and formerly of Murphy, NC passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019.
Wayne was a native of Cherokee County and a son of the late Lawrence Arthur and Annie Mae Stiles Timpson.
Wayne was a US Army veteran. He went on to work for Lockheed Martin until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Timpson and brother, Calvin Timpson.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebekah Frahm, son-in-law Jonathan Frahm and three granddaughters. He is also survived by four brothers, Elbert “Tim” Timpson, Frank Timpson, Larry Timpson and Johnny Timpson; two sisters, Berniece Deuel and Kathy Parker; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be at 2 pm on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Burial to follow at the Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 to 2 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church, 1650 NC Highway 141, Murphy, NC 28906.

Linda Lou Anderson, age 74 of Hayesville, passed away September 20, 2019. Linda was born in Dekalb County, GA to the late Rupert and Willie Brown Dispain. She loved to camp and spend time with her grandkids. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Dispain. She is survived by her husband, Robert Anderson; her daughter, Gina Bryson and husband David of Lilburn, GA; 3 grandchildren, Courtney Bryson and her wife Renee Ussery of Rutledge, GA, Kendra Bryson of Lawerenceville, GA, and Cameron Bryson of Lawrenceville, GA; 1 great grandson Riley, and a great grand daughter Reigna to be born in December. Funeral Services will be held at 1pm on Monday, September 23, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Hayesville. Rev. Denny Moss will officiate. Pallbearers will be Nathan Garrett, Stony Anderson, Dale Penland, David Penland, Chris Bradley, and Zachary Moss. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 1:00 before the Funeral Service. Sandra Faye Gilbert Vollmer, 73, died peacefully in her home in Andrews, North Carolina on September 11, 2019.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Thomas Gilbert and nephew Richard Buckley Jacques.
Surviving relatives included her mother, Margaret Evadna Maxine Donovan Gilbert, her brothers Paul Gilbert (and wife Hallie) and John Gilbert, her sister Mary Jane Gilbert Jacques (and husband Richard Jacques), husband James Vollmer, children Matthew Vollmer (and wife Kelly Pender) and Carrie Jane Vollmer Brass (and husband Jesse), and grandchildren Elijah Vollmer, Lily Jane Brass, and Isaiah Brass.
Sandra delighted in her roles as daughter, sister, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She loved the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Swiss Alps, The Sound of Music, songbirds, wildflowers, Perry Mason, Café Francais International coffees, hiking, and chocolate. She baked bread, canned strawberry jam and applesauce, baked desserts, tended gardens, sewed clothes, painted pictures, and was rarely without her camera, with which she documented the idiosyncratic spectacles of family life. A relentlessly joyful presence in the life of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her, Sandra never met a stranger and gifted friends and foes alike with laughter, kindness, cookies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, brownies, and a seemingly endless supply of snappy comebacks.
She worked as a hygienist, a dental office manager, and homemaker, while volunteering for the Murphy Adventist Christian School’s fruit program, orchestrating the delivery of Indian River citrus for nearly two decades to countless members of her community.
A lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist church, she served for over forty years as the pianist for her local congregation.

Donald “Todd” Fleming, age 37 of Murphy passed away September 18, 2019. Todd was born in Cherokee County to Donnie Fleming and Alice Graves Kephart. Todd enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved basketball and football. He worked as a carpenter building homes.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, Jim Kephart; daughter, Khloe Grace Fleming; sister, April Fleming and ex-wife, Jennifer Fleming.
Funeral services will be held 3pm, Sunday September 22, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Murphy. Rev. Edward Carter will officiate. Pallbearers will be Anthony Brown, Adam Fleming, Gauge Hughes, Eric Steele, Blake Ross and Cody Ross. Burial will be at New Martins Creek Cemetery.

Timothy Scroggs: Obituary

Timothy Scroggs, 64, of Brasstown passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at his residence. He was a native and lifetime resident of Brasstown. Tim built a reputation over 40 years for working on German and foreign cars. He enjoyed riding the country roads locally with his family, but also traveling across the country. Tim also enjoyed trout fishing and sitting down for a good meal.
He was the son of the late Harold and Doris Parton Scroggs. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Scroggs Jr. and Scott Scroggs; and an infant sister, Lanette.
Surviving are his wife, Lea Graham Scroggs; a daughter, Annie Scroggs of Miami, Florida and Johnathan Scroggs and wife, Zoe of Hayesville; two grandchildren; an aunt, Mabel Taylor of Asheville, North Carolina; an uncle, Tommy Anderson of Hayesville; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2019 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Kenny White officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 Thursday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.

Robert David Anderson, age 76 of Brasstown, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at his residence.
He was born in Haywood County, NC to the late Ray and Mallie Wooten. He loved fishing, working in his yard, splitting wood, smoking his pipe and being with his family and dog, Gunner. Robert was a member of Hickory Stand Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Lee Anderson; brothers, Tommy, Lane, Ray Jr., Linwood, Neal and Kenneth Anderson and sisters, Brenda Teems and Joan Anderson.
He is survived by his two daughters, Pam Anderson and fiance, John Farmer of Murphy and Gwendolyn Queen and her husband, Chris of Whittier, grandchildren, Taylor Gibson, Bryson Ledford, Kyle Luke, Bobby Allison and Brandi Fesperman; great grandchildren, Arya Gibson, Clarissa Lavan, Cole Allison and Claire Allison; brothers, Terry Anderson and wife, Carla, and sister, Peggy Henson and husband, Red.

Kelly Luther Owens, age 50 of Warne, NC passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Union General Hospital.
He was the son of Luther Owens and the late Jerleen Owenby Owens. Kelly was a physical therapy assistant with Mountain Home Nursing. He was a Steelers fan, enjoyed collecting comic books and football cards. Kelly was a great man and was dedicated to his family, friends and patients.He loved to make people laugh and he was a very loving husband and father. Kelly will be greatly missed, although we know he is rejoicing in Heaven with his family who has gone on before.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Vicki Brooks Owens; son, Kasey Owens; daughter, Lindseyrae Cowart and grandchildren, Adalyn Vandewerker and Alex Cowart.

Kathryn Ann Stevens, age 60, of Pendergrass, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center – Braselton.
Kathryn was born August 22, 1959 to the late Frank and Margarett “Susie” Calhoun in Murphy, North Carolina. She was a purchasing analyst for Kubota Manufacturing for 13 years. She loved pandas, bells, boating, and riding her motorcycle. She enjoyed camping for many years and was an avid clogger in her younger years. She and Greg enjoyed gardening and kept all the neighbors and friends fed from their garden. She and Greg participated in a lot of car shows over the years, showing a 2001 bright yellow Corvette.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Greg Stevens of Pendergrass; dogs, Skipper and Harley; brother, David Calhoun of Cartersville, Georgia; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carl and Edith Stevens; sister-in-law, Carla Stevens of Norcross, Georgia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vickie and Sam Hinegardner of Woodstock, Georgia; and nephews, Alex and Ryan Hinegardner.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Pavilion in Memorial Park South Cemetery in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The family will receive friends following the service.
An inurnment will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019 in Sunset Cemetery.

Juanita Bryson, age 86 of Murphy passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019. She was the daughter of the late James and Lillie Beaver. Juanita was of the baptist faith. She loved her flower garden, doing crafts, and shopping at thrift stores.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Hoyt Beaver and Howard Beaver; half brother, Lester Brannon; sister, Margie Morrow and half sister, Amilee Brannon.
She is survived by her brothers, Charles Beaver, Austin Beaver, Melvin Beaver and wife, Shirley; sisters, Linda Patterson and Opal Chambers and husband, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.

Ricky E. Crawford, 67, of Murphy passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at his residence. He was a native of Jackson County, Georgia. Ricky lived in Athens, Georgia for more than 20 years while working for Bridges Funeral Home. He then moved to the area in 1996, where he worked for Ivie Funeral Home for more than 20 years. He was a member of Tomotla Baptist Church, where he enjoyed playing the bass guitar. Ricky enjoyed building model cars, collecting old cameras, and especially photography.
He was the son of Mattie Crawford of Athens, Georgia and the late Howard Crawford. He was also preceded in death by a son, Avery Crawford.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 44 years, Debra Crawford; two sons, Emery Crawford of Murphy and Aaron Crawford and wife, Rei of Berea, Kentucky; a sister, Marsha Waters and husband, Tommy of Athens, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Tomotla Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Stiles officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 Saturday afternoon at the Tomotla Baptist Church prior to the services.
