Hayesville, N.C. — The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left one person dead and two others injured at a residence late last week.
Deputies responded to a call of shots fired at a home in the county, where they found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported for medical treatment. Their conditions have not yet been released.
Authorities confirmed that the suspected gunman was also shot and killed during the incident. Sheriff’s deputies said the situation appears to have been isolated to the home and that there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.
Investigators have not released the names of those involved as they continue to notify families and gather evidence. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist.
The sheriff’s office said more information will be made available as the investigation progresses.
Residents in the quiet rural community have expressed shock at the violence, noting that such incidents are rare in Clay County.
