Hayesville Woman Faces Multiple Felony Charges After Methamphetamine, Controlled Medications Found

HAYESVILLE, N.C. — A Hayesville woman faces multiple felony charges after deputies allegedly found methamphetamine and controlled medications in her possession during two separate incidents at the Clay County Detention Center.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 6:25 p.m. Aug. 22 to the Dollar General at 3500 U.S. Highway 64 East in Hayesville following a report of a woman who had been sitting in her vehicle for approximately two hours and appeared to be acting abnormally.

Clay County Sgt. Cory Scroggs and Officer Nate Rogers arrived at the scene and found Shannon Nicole Silvey, 46, of Hayesville, sitting in the driver’s seat of a four-door Honda passenger car.

Authorities said Silvey appeared to be asleep and had to be awakened after several attempts by Sgt. Scroggs. Silvey reportedly told officers she had been awake for approximately 48 hours and acknowledged taking prescribed medications.

Silvey consented to a search of the vehicle, authorities said.

During the search, officers located a red eyeglasses case inside Silvey’s purse. The purse allegedly contained a small baggie with a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, along with a glass smoking pipe.

Silvey was arrested and transported to the Clay County Detention Center.

Authorities said an additional discovery was made during an inventory of Silvey’s property at approximately 3:11 a.m. Aug. 23.

According to the sheriff’s office, Clay County Detention Officer Payton Hopkins found a prescription bottle containing numerous controlled medications that did not correspond with the medication listed on the bottle’s label.

Using a pill identification database, Sgt. Scroggs identified the medications as 27 alprazolam 0.5 mg tablets, 11 clonazepam 1 mg tablets, one alprazolam 1 mg tablet and one-half acetaminophen/oxycodone 325/10 mg tablet.

was ultimately charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of a controlled substance in a prison or jail, and violation of probation.

Authorities said Silvey was initially held without bond because she was already out on pretrial release for another possession of methamphetamine charge.
She was later issued a $50,000 secured bond and released.

The allegations contained in the charges have not been proven in court, and Silvey is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
