Bryson City, NC- The Swain County Maroon Devils pulled out a close victory over the Brevard Blue Devils last night in a game that came down to the wire.
Swain found themselves in a 6-5 hole entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Maroon Devils maintained their composure and found a way to get on base. Ultimately, it was timely baserunning that won the game for the Maroon Machine, as Gabe Lillard stole home on a wild pitch to end the game.
Lillard was also the man on the mound for Swain County in this one, as he lasted 6.2 innings and only allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 6 Blue Devil batters. Ronnie Griggs was credited with the win, as he came on in relief of Lillard and secured the final out of the top of the seventh inning.
Swain County’s offense tallied up 9 hits on the evening from 6 different batters. Lawson Woodard, Gabe Lillard, and Ronnie Griggs led the way with 2 hits a piece. Lillard launched a home run in the fourth inning, his league-leading third of the year.
Swain will be back in action on the diamond tonight, as they travel to Brevard for game 2 of this 2 game series.
