On Friday, December 20th the Robbinsville Black Knights (0-1, 0-0) less than a week off their state championship in football traveled to Hayesville to take on the Yellow Jackets (4-1, 3-0). Head coach Mike Cottrell told me pregame due to their extended run in the playoffs they had played only one game. He said they had little to no scouting report for them other than they are a veteran team with 11 seniors.

Junior Paul White knocks down the first of his two 3’s.

Their experience showed in the game where they got down early to the Jackets. There veteran presence showed to help them even take a few leads in the game.

In the first quarter the Jackets quickly got out to a 6-0 lead and chose to go their role players early. They were able to extend the lead and finish out the quarter with a 16-7 Yellow Jacket lead.

Robbinsville came storming back in the second quarter outscoring the Jackets. To bring the game in tight for a only a two point lead for the Jackets. The Jackets had played in a tough action packed game just twenty-four hours earlier. This may have impacted them tonight, but they carried a 28-26 lead into the halftime break.

Sophomore Kolbe Ashe sets up the offense.

Coming out in the third the Jackets were still a little flat allowing Robbinsville to control parts of the third quarter. The Black Knights had a lead and seemed to be ready to upset the Yellow Jackets. The Jackets hit the Knights with their patented press and gave the Knights fits. They could not handle the pressure and Hayesville regained control to extend their to 42-36 at the end of the third.

The Jackets did not let off and continued to press the Knights hard and were able to push their lead out further. Pressure and good timing led to both juniors Blake McClure and Hayden McClure having a several steal.s

Sophomore Kolbe Ashe at one point hit back-to back threes to take the wind out of the sails for the Black Knights. To top things off sophomore big man Jake McTaggart threw down a big dunk with about four minutes left to put the seal on the game. The Yellow Jackets coasted to victory in the last few minutes.
