Dorothy “Dot” McMahan Owenby, 94, of Andrews passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019 in a Murphy care facility. Dorothy was a native of Nantahala, but lived in Andrews most of her life. Dot worked at Berkshire Mills and Lay’s 5 & 10 throughout her life. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Tabernacle, where she volunteered with “The Golden Girls” serving families in need.

She was the daughter of the late Horace Judson and Esther Mashburn McMahan and the wife of the late David Lee “D.L.” Owenby Jr. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mantolene Ivester and an infant sister, Pauline McMahan; two brothers, J.D. McMahan and an infant brother, Kenneth McMahan; two sisters-in-law, Martha McMahan and Margie McMahan; and a brother-in-law, J.V. Ivester.

Surviving are a son, Dick Lee Owenby and wife, Shirley of Dillon, Montana; a grandson, David Lee Owenby and wife, Kelley of Erie, Colorado; a sister, Janet Cearley and husband, Joe of Chatsworth, Georgia; four brothers, Manuel McMahan and Doyle McMahan, both of High Point, North Carolina, Dillard McMahan and wife, Hildred of Topton, and James McMahan and wife, Vivian of Andrews; a sister-in-law, Wanda McMahan of High Point; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Faith Baptist Tabernacle with the Revs. Wayne Morgan and Eddie Hardin officiating. The interment was in Briartown Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gary McMahan, John Kilpatrick, J.D. Queen, Pearly Owenby, Reid Wilson, and Darryl Brown.

The family received friends from 6-8 Saturday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Dorothy “Dot” McMahan Owenby to the Briartown Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Sidney May, 877 Briartown Church Road, Topton, NC 28781.
