Union County Lands Proven Winner in Cottrell
UNION COUNTY — Union County High School has made a statement hire for its boys basketball program, bringing in one of the region’s most accomplished coaches to lead the Panthers.
The school announced the hiring of Coach Michael Cottrell as its new head boys basketball coach, a move that brings more than two decades of experience and a track record of sustained success to Blairsville.
Cottrell, a graduate of Cullowhee High School and Lenoir-Rhyne University, spent the past 25 years building a powerhouse at Hayesville High School. During that stretch, his teams captured two state championships and an impressive 17 conference titles, establishing Hayesville as a consistent contender year in and year out.
Now, he turns the page to a new challenge in Union County, where expectations are high and the foundation is in place for continued growth.
“I want to thank Union County for giving me this opportunity,” Cottrell said. “I’ve always thought Union County was first class and one of the best high schools in the area. I’m looking forward to getting started, meeting everyone, and getting to work this summer.”
Known throughout Western North Carolina and North Georgia for his ability to develop talent and build strong locker rooms, Cottrell brings more than just wins with him. His programs have long been defined by discipline, toughness, and consistency — traits Union County hopes will translate quickly to the Panthers’ sideline.
School officials believe his experience and leadership make him a natural fit for the program as it looks to compete at a higher level in the coming seasons.
With summer workouts on the horizon, all eyes now turn to how quickly Cottrell can put his stamp on the Panthers. If his past success is any indication, Union County fans won’t have to wait long to see results.
The Panthers have their guy — and a new era of Union County basketball is officially underway.
