HAYESVILLE, N.C. — A Clay County Sheriff’s Office K-9 is back home after being seriously injured, drawing community support during a public welcome held in downtown Hayesville.

K-9 Luca, handled by Investigator Steven Smith, returned from treatment at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he had been receiving care following injuries sustained earlier last week.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Clay County K-9 Initiative organized a gathering to welcome Luca home. Supporters assembled outside Lipof Law Office on Main Street, next to The Copper Door, as the K-9 and his handler arrived back in town.

The event served as a show of appreciation for Luca’s service and resilience, with community members turning out to celebrate his return and recovery. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding Luca’s injury.
