Lady Yellow Jackets Fall at Home to Cherokee

The Hayesville Lady Yellow Jackets had a challenging task taking on the Cherokee Lady Braves for the second game in a row. Unfortunately for Hayesville, last night’s game was eerily similar to the one played on Friday. The Hayesville offense couldn’t score the way they needed to, to keep up with Cherokee. At the same time, the Lady Braves were great on both sides of the ball en route to a 62-25 win over Hayesville.

1st Half:

In the Friday matchup, the Lady Yellow Jackets got torched by Cherokee’s star guard Leilaya McMillan. That was not the case last night, as Hayesville did an incredible job limiting McMillan. However, Cherokee showed that their offense is much more than just one player. While the Lady Yellow Jackets used a diamond&1 and box&1 defenses, freshman Breanna Abrams was tasked with guarding McMillan, limiting her to five points in the first half, the other Lady Braves stepped up. Going into halftime, Cherokee led 36-11.

Freshman Mallory Peck knocks down a free throw.

2nd Half:

As mentioned, the Lady Braves did an incredible job spreading out their scoring. Hayesville kept it out of their star players’ hands. Three Lady Braves scored in double digits on the night to ensure Hayesville had no chance at a comeback. The Hayesville offense didn’t get much better in the second half either, scoring just 14 points. The bright spot offensively for Hayesville was Freshman Mallory Peck, who continues to show improved post moves and a good stroke from the Free throw line. Peck had 11 points on the night, including 9-10 from the free-throw line. Peck was the only double-digit score for Hayesville, though, as Cherokee would cruise to victory in the second half 62-25.

The Lady Yellow Jackets will next play on Tuesday, February 8th, hosting the Robbinsville Lady Black Knights. This is the final regular-season game for the Lady Yellow Jackets.
