Let’s take a look at the Hayesville Yellow Jackets previous week from 12/30 – 1/05. The Yellow Jackets finally got a well deserved holiday break after playing in the very competitive Battle of the States tournament. Head coach Michael Cottrell gave the team a rare weekday off but with only one game on the schedule for the week there was plenty of prep time. That one game was against rivals the Towns Co. Indians who had beaten the Yellow Jackets the previous week.

In the Yellow Jackets lone game of the week the fans for both sides were treated to a great game. The atmosphere was everything you could ask for in a high school basketball game. The gym was packed barely a seat to be had and the concession stand was cranking all night. Towns Co. had a first quarter lead and a fourth quarter lead with the Yellow Jackets playing stronger in the middle of the game. Yet Hayesville never could get their lead to a comfortable point. After losing the lead and looking like they may lose again to Towns Co. Hayesville finished strong. Thanks to good free throw shooting and some timely offensive rebounds Hayesville pulled out a 52-48 victory.

The upcoming week should be a fun week for basketball fans with a three game schedule. Hayesville host Highlands on Monday night, travels to Hiwassee Dam for a Tuesday night game, and finish the week with a big conference game hosting Andrews. It is a big week for Hayesville and could very help give fans an insight into what the ceiling for this young Yellow Jacket team could be.

Preview:

In the first game this week on Monday January the sixth Hayesville hosts the Highlands Highlanders. People are not sure quite what to think of this highlands team who is only 2-8. Yet they have played a two point game with a really good Franklin team in a loss. Have lost to Murphy by one point, and in their first game against Murphy beat them. They are hard to get a read on but have some experience with four seniors and five juniors. Hayesville will have to come ready to play and needs to focus on their play not that of their opponents.

In their second game they will be traveling just one county over to play at Hiwassee Dam in a Tuesday night matchup. The Eagles are 3-6 but have played some good competition and have a few quality wins. They have beat Highlands at Highlands which is a very long trip for the Eagles. As well very early in the year they beat Towns Co. by a larger margin than Hayesville did. Once again it is another game where Hayesville should be favored but need to play well to ensure a victory.

In the last game of the week Hayesville hosts Andrews in a very important matchup for conference supremacy. Hayesville and Andrews are the only two teams left with undefeated conference records. After this game one will stand alone atop the conference and it will their conference to lose. Suffice to say this is a huge game for both teams and both teams will be leaning on their stars. Hayesville will need a good night from sophomore Jake McTaggart. Andrews has some size to contest McTaggart and it may be his toughest matchup yet. Yet where I think the game will be decided, is between the conference’s two best point guards. Hayesville Sophomore Kolbe Ashe and Andrews Kabe Ellis, if one player decidedly out plays the other expect that team to win the game.

This should be a great week of basketball and look for the Yellow Jackets to find their shooting legs this week. If Hayesville starts to shoot it from the outside better this team could be tough to beat on any given night.
