The Hayesville Yellow Jackets extended their winning streak to 16 straight games thanks to an 11-5 victory in round one of the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs over Bethany Community.

The Jackets found themselves in an early hole, as Bethany put up four runs in the top of the first inning. Hayesville answered back with runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th inning, and this first-round playoff game was tied heading into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Bethany Community was forced to make a pitching change in the bottom of the 6th, and that’s when the wheels fell off and the Jackets persevered. Jackson Sellers, Cade Caruso, Dawson Devane, and Michael Mauney all were credited with RBIs in the difference-making inning.

Jackson Sellers was on the mound for Hayesville, surrendering eight hits and five runs over six innings,  while striking out six and walking two. Cade Caruso came on in relief and pitched one inning of shutout baseball.

Caruso also led Hayesville at the plate with two runs batted in, while Chance Hughes led the team in hits with a double and a single.

Hayesville will be back to work in Clay County on Friday, May 9th, as they host Mountain Heritage for round two of the NCHSAA State Playoffs.
